How much support from friends/family will I need and for how long after surgery

Recommended Posts

I live alone in a different state from my family and wondered, from those out there that have already had the surgery, do I need to have someone around right after the surgery and for how long will I need someone to help me? I know I probably shouldn't drive in the 1st week, at least - so I will need someone to drive me to my doctor's office (even though he's only 2 miles away from my house, I highly doubt I will want to walk there within the 1st couple of weeks - lol).

I ask these questions so I can line up people and some of them need time to plan for the time - for obvious reasons (family/work/etc).

Any information is greatly appreciated!

Assuming you recover well, you shouldn't need a ton of help. I stayed two nights in the hospital and of course my husband drove me home, but I was driving after about 3-4 days. My doc said I was OK to drive as soon as I wasn't taking pain meds and wasn't feeling much pain. I was very careful and just ran a few errands but I went back to work after 6 days and drove my normal commute. It might be good to have a friend who lives close by to be "on call" in case you have any issues or emergencies, but as long as you have your house stocked for post-op, I think you'll be able to be pretty independent.

Wow! That is great! I think I would only have family in town for the surgery day through maybe the first or second day out

of the hospital so to hear that I would probably be pretty good on my own makes me feel a lot better.

Thanks for the imput and stay strong on your journey

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
