Did you keep it a secret??

Recommended Posts

When I was banded, my kids and hubby knew. I told my younger sister, who I was very close to. On a big family camping trip I walked into her campsite to discover her telling about 7 other people and really 'dissing me for having the surgery. It has been hard to forgive and forget that moment as many of the people there were her friends and really distant aquaintances who had no business knowing.

I kinda feel that if you want to go the "keep it quiet" route, you need to keep it REALLY quiet. At this point, I plan to tell a much larger circle of people when I am sleeved. Only DH and two (now grown!) kids know the band is being removed. My sister is now passed away and i don't give a rip about the people she blabbed to.

I have told very few people about my sleeve; I'm having surgery in November; traveling to Mexico and calling it a "vacation". Just told everyone I will be incommunicado for the timeframe, but didn't even tell them where I was going. I feel it is my own personal decision and I'm very protective of it, so I don't want anyone discouraging me!

I told family and close coworkers and I got some negative responses. It was frustrating because they didn't understand what I was going through. Now, I get 99% positive feedback since it is obvious the sleeve works. The only negativity post op came from a acquantance I have that is a personal trainer. She thinks WLS is cheating. I always remind anyone who is planning to keep their surgery a secret that people WILL ASK you how you are losing the weight. If you don't want to tell them about your surgery, just be prepared with an answer. Good luck! The sleeved life is awesome!

My work and husband knew, my mom and family did not know. I told my mom about 1 year later because she was coming to visit. I still haven't told my family after 2 years but i'm sure my mom has. She can't keep her yap shut (hehehe) but my family hasn't asked me about it ever.

I told my family and my close friends. If I see someone who needs to know (they are overweight too) I will also tell them. For the most part though I don't want everyone thinking of me as a previous fat person. Shoot when I was fat I didn't think of myself as fat and I don't want the stigma now. I don't want people looking at everything I eat which they tend to do or their stupid comments. I do not deny but if it is someone I see from just passing where I don't have time to explain when they say, "How have you lost so much weight?" I will say, "Long story but I eat low carb." If I have more than 2 minutes I will tell them the story unless I think they are just asking for gossip's sake.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
