Why sugar free

Recommended Posts

Because some docs want to put you into ketosis. Too much sugar and that isn't going to happen.

Sugar is a very quick source of energy. If you are eating a relatively large amount of sugar after your surgery, your body will simply use that for energy instead of the "harder" process of burning fat for energy. If you are not burning fat for energy, then you won't be loosing the weight like you should be.

Also, if you take in too much sugar in one sitting, you could experience dumping syndrome even with the sleeve. Essentially, the sleeve says "I want Protein - not sugar" and expels the sugar back the way it came from. It doesn't happen to everyone, but there is a chance of it.

Why does everything have to be sugar free? Is this something we have to live by or is it something during the stages of food?

It doesn't have to be SF. I have never done sugar free. I can't tolerate the taste of it. I wish I could. But Nancy is right, too much at once and you can experience dumping. I have many times. No matter how many 'experts' say VSG'ers can't dump, they can. The key is moderation.smile.gif

I try to do mostly SF but not everything is SF in my life. I had regular foods with full sugar and no dumping. Granted, taking in sugar might slow your loss. Staying SF and low carb just raises your weight loss success. It really is a very personal decision post op to go SF or not.

This brings up another question on whether everyone does do low carb. My doctor has never said I need to do low carb and the food information they gave me never addressed staying away from the high carb things. I know we need to focus on eating Protein first, then fruit/veggies then whole grains but do some doctors suggest it has to be low carb?

I think it's just something that some surgeons suggest to boost initial weight loss, because ketosis does help a lot with fat loss. That being said, I think that if you stick to the suggestion protein first, veggies/fruit second, whole grains third, more often than not you'll not have room for the whole grain carbs.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
