C-pap usage after surgery...

Recommended Posts

This is the same message that I posted on the OH website, but I thought I'd get all of your expert opinions as well... Thanks in advance!

Hey everyone! I am two weeks out and I am needing my c-pap! I know I need it because I have been snoring, waking up multiple times at night, sleepy during the day and I also have a very dry mouth when I wake in the am (so I know my mouth is opening while I sleep) and I have been waking up with headaches....

While I was in the hospital, my surgeon did not want me to use my c-pap because of the air it could/would put into my stomach.. but now that I'm two weeks out do you think it would be okay? I see my surgeon on Monday so I'm going to ask him then. When I called the nurse, she told me to use it and see how I feel when I wake up, if it bothers me, don't use it. Sounds easy enough, but I'm worried if it could cause real problems with my sleeve?

So yeah, I thought I'd ask all you experts w/ the actual experience what you'd do, or have done in the past?

Thanks again :)

I had my surgery done in Mexicali with Dr. Aceves at the end of January. They advised bringing my c-pap machine with me and i used it in the hospital even while coming out of recovery. I have used the machine nightly since the surgery and am wondering if I still need it but afraid to try sleeping without it. My power was out one night and I didn't sleep for Beans that night but don't know if it was due to no c-pap or being hot, no power etc. I think my pressure needs to be adjusted as I am fairly gassy in the morning and think I may be getting too much air. But to answer your question, I was not restricted and was encouraged to use the c-pap from the beginning.

I had to bring mine to the hospital with me, and if I fell asleep without it they would wake me to put it on, so I think if you need it, use it!

Same as the others, I was told to bring it to the hospital with me and have used it every day since. No issues with extra gas that I can tell.

I took mine to the hospital, and they took it when I first started prepping to check the settings on it. After that, they never wanted me to put it one. They had me on oxygen for most of the time I was there, so i don't know.

I've been wearing it since I got home, but MAN it dries my mouth out. I have a full face mask, and it has a humidifier, My mouth got so dry that it woke me up in the wee hours. It was so dry that licking my lips and trying to swallow was impossible. I took the mask off, and tried to sip some Water which really didn't feel good to my sleeve. I just left it off the rest of the night. I don't know whether I should wear mine or not???

I'm surprised your dr didn't want you to wear it at all though. I would definitely have to call and ask about that.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
