Hi all First, I'm glad to be here and have to admit something, the post I've been reading have been more informative than any med article or Doc profile. Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for making this site.

Second. Can someone describe for me what exactly is the BAND DIET? I am currantly 250lbs/5"6"/23yrs old and is considering banding surg. But part of me is curious about trying the diet of a bandster and see how I do.

Please reply with as much info as poss, Thank you.

B. in Boston.

There are 3 diets. 1 preop diet which consists of liquids (not sure how long yours will be, mine was 24 hours). There is a post op diet which includes liquids, soft mooshies then real food. The typical band patient can eat 1/4 - 1/2 cup servings during meal times. The best diet is lean Protein first, then vegies. Apples have to be skinned. The best thing about being banded is your body will tell you what doesn't work. For example, Pasta and bread. Some folks will PB (throw up) if they eat too much or have a "stuck" feeling if they can't get it down. So far because I am not filled I can eat everything. Once I get a fill I will have restriction which typically occures 1-3 fills in. Keep in mind the dietary requirements as well. You will learn this from the nutrionist ie. at least 75 grams of protein per day..things like that. Good luck.

THanks juliegeraci for replying to my post but now I'm a little confused about fills. From your post I think I got-a patient does not have food restriction unless filled (meaning band is tightened)? I thought once the band was in place you are pretty much under restriction already.

Please help,

Ub.

No, with the band just sitting there you have no restriction technically. There is no saline in it. However, some people do feel it. I am one that does not. It depends on your body and the size of band that is placed. For example, I have another friend who is just feeling restriction with 5 fills...5 fills! Once the band is filled technically you are suppose to have restriction...it may take more than 1 fill to feel what you really need though. Hope this helps.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
