Ok, I don't officially start my pre-op diet until Monday. But I've been trying out Protein Shakes here and there. There are days I'm so busy I don't eat Breakfast and just have my coffee and I'm fine until lunch. But the few mornings I've had a shake for breakfast, I have hunger pains within an hour. Why? Has this happened to anyone else. Is it the Protein or something else in the shakes doing this?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be helpful, before I start this full swing next week.

Protein Shakes aren't very filling. That is one reason why as soon as folks can eat food, most surgeons say to get off the Protein Drinks. Also some have very high carb content. We were required to use a Protein Drink that had no more than 5 carbs. I have one after working out and find the Labrada Lean Body on the go RTD pretty filling, but they are expensive.

Check the number of carbs in your shake. Before surgery I found that carbs definitely made me hungry. It isn't an issue now and I don't really have hunger and I don't eat many carbs anyway. The Protein drinks move through you pretty quickly too and you don't get that "full" feeling like you would if you ate a dense protein. Good luck with your pre-op diet! What day is your surgery scheduled for?

Thanks for the info. My surgery is on July 11th. The Protein drink today had 26 gm of protein and 8 gms of carbs. So it was pretty low in carbs. Oh well. Just wondering if there was something else I could do not to feel this way. LOL

liquids don't stay in your stomach and run right thru you. That is why my plan says NO Protein Shakes EVER!! They want us to focus on real food and not liquid nutrients. That way we are not eating all of the time because we are hungry. I was starving on my liquid and full liquid phases. Now that I can have food, I feel so much more satisfied because the Protein I get from meat stays in my stomach longer than liquid that just runs right thu.

Make sense?

I think everyone is different. I'm post op, pre op, the shakes were not too satisfying, but I was on full liquids and they helped to make sure I was getting Protein. Post op, I still drink them and I find them VERY filling, it takes me about 30 to 45 minutes to drink one and then I don't want to eat anything for a long time. I know some plans say no, but this way I am making sure I get my protein and other vitamins/minerals and I make mine with skim milk so I get the added protein and benefits of milk too.

Kelly, I'm just wondering what you eat to get all your Protein in without the shakes. I would love to cut out my Protein Shake but without one each day I can't get close to 60 grams of protein(my nut said 60-80 ) eating 2 oz of food 30r 4 times a day. Advice please!

Bluebonnet has some that have only 3 carbs and 26 grams of Protein, plus they are low in sodium, cholesterol and have no artificial sweeteners (just Stevia).

I like the flavor but everyone is different. It's good whey Protein but I am also taking separate amino acids and all my Vitamins to be sure I'm getting everything I need before the big day.

Last night was rough though, I had a really stressful and active day at work and it was my first day on liquid. I ended up have a teaspoon of almond butter around 7pm which really helped but I don't want to do that again in the next two weeks. I am going to try and start practicing not 'eating' and drinking at the same time (even though my 'meals' are liquid too). I think just getting into the habit of having drinkless meals will be good after surgery.

Also, try making them with less liquid. I found that thicker shakes tend to stay with me a bit longer.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
