I feel terrible for you Kelly! And anyone else with hunger- I have not had hunger since the surgery. Sometimes I feel a pang when I smell something delish but it is almost nostalgia because it disappears. I feel for you if you do have hunger as it seems it would make this journey more difficult! HUGS!

Awww. Thanks Meggie!

Yes, it is HUNGER!! I never had the head hunger thing. My stomach GROWLS for real all the friggen time! I heard people say it is false hunger from acid, but my dr. says that is bologna and there is no science to back this theory up! So, scratch that idea!! I do take Nexium, so I guess I just deal with it. I have always had to ignore it to lose weight and I guess I will have to continue if it doesn' t leave. I so wished it would go, but maybe I will be one of the one's that is unlucky!

I do notice that it is not that RAVENOUS hunger like before. It is like it is more manageable now. Like I CAN wait to eat. Where as before, I had to eat now!!!

Kelly :(

It DOES suck and make things more difficult. I find it almost more difficult in some ways, because pre-op if I was hungry, I would just eat something, no big whoop. And then I'd feel fine. But now I feel like I can only eat something when I'm supposed to, so then I start to obsess over when I can eat something and the hunger just gnaws at me in the meantime (it's not acid or anything, I've got that well-covered). I NEVER did that before. It's bumming me the eff out if I'm honest. I feel sometimes that I'm hungrier now than I ever was pre-op.

Sigh.

I had this too, and still do sometimes. What helped me ALOT, was a couple of chewable gaviscon. It quells the growling, and over time I use it less and less (maybe 2-3 time a month now)

On another note, I don't thing the medical industry has done any research into this phenomenon.....so just cuz your Doc says something, doesn't mean it is the way he says.

Try the gaviscon at times of hunger, let us know how it goes.

I don't have chewable gaviscon, have chewable gas x. I do have liquid gaviscon. I will take some of it today and see how it goes and keep ya'll posted.

I know that Dr.'s don't know everything too. I did, however, search on the internet for acid causing false hunger after he told me that there was no scientific evidence that supports that theory. AND I did not find a thing, other than talk here about it. So, maybe he is right! I don't know, I just wish somone would make it STOP!! LOL

Kelly :)

FWIW, I have chewable Gaviscon galore, just bought some more when I was on vacation, it does work really well. (Doesn't make me not hungry though, unfortunately. :()

My doctors and nutritionists get all up in my stuff about having too much artificial sweetener -- they think having sweet stuff causes cravings, even when it's not actual sugar. I'm not sure about their theory either, but they seem quite convinced. :D I'm not craving things per se (definitely not sweets), I'm just HUNGRY sometimes. Sigh...

I've read about artificial sweetener increasing cravings for sweet stuff. Apparently your body doesn't like being cheated and isn't satisfied until it gets what it wants.

I beg to differ though as I used to be a total sf gum and diet cola addict in my teens. I was well within the healthy weight range. In my 20s I became intolerant to artificial sweetener and things went down hill from there. I used to use gum much like many smokers use cigarettes, ie I'd only eat when I had strong growling stomach hunger and was happy to stop eating to continue chewing gum!!

I have slight hunger if i go a long time before eating but it's completely different than before surgery. I know acid reducers have already been discussed but sometimes one kind doesn't work and when the person changes meds it helps. I have seen others say nexium doesn't work as well. I have nexium and prilosec. I ran out of the prilosec once and used the nexium and it did not help as much. I had more stomach rumblings. So i got more prilosec and it worked better for me. It might make a difference on when you take it or if you take it on an empty stomach.

I did take 2 before bedtime to protect my stomach during the night when it gets empty but now that I am out this far I am going to try just 1 and see if it's enough.

It might be worth it to try the prilosec just to see if it's better for you. I would absolutely hate feeling hungry all the time! Good luck sweetie!

:)

Thanks. I don't know. I have heard that some things don't work as well for some as they do for others. I have taken Nexium for 7 years. Maybe I need to take something else although my Dr. swears Nexium is the best. Since I can get Prilosec at Walmart, maybe I will just go get a small pack and try it for a week and see how it goes!

I will keep you all posted!

Kelly

I have been through many PPIs over the years, including Nexium and Prilosec. I finally found that Protonix (gen: pantoprazole) works best for me. I've also been using it since surgery and it is working aces.

Doesn't take my hunger away though, curses! :D

I get the generic prilosec so its cheaper and seems to work as well as namebrand. Definitely keep us posted! Good luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
