Anyone else have to take gallbladder pills (Ursodiol)?

Recommended Posts

I was just prescribed Ursodiol to help prevent gallstones (I am almost 1 month out). Just wondering if there were any side effects and if they really worked. I am a sonographer so I am almost tempted to not take them until I see something in my gallbladder ;) Did you have gallstones after sleeve surgery?

They can tax your liver. But you only take them during your losing stage, so it's not a long-time deal. I take them (I forget sometimes). I don't want my gallbladder out if I can help it. I know people who had theirs out without another thought and no problems. My sister had hers out and cannot eat anything with any fat without having an attack or straight diarrhea. She said she can eat something one day and she's fine, then eat the exact same thing the next day and have a terrible time and barely make it to the bathroom. I don't like that uncertainty. Hers has been out for 3 years. I would like to think I would be lucky and have no problems, but who knows? I'll keep my GB if I can!!

Edited to add: I asked my home doctor for the pills, she didn't suggest them to me first.

Ah, that is something I have been thinking about talking to my PCP about. I don't want my gallbladder out either. :(

Hi Holly,

I'm with Kaiser Fremont Bariatrics program and I believe we are all prescribed Ursodiol. My Kaiser WLS "Bible" claims it lowers the chance you will have to have your GB removed to 2-3%. I'm happy to take them because the last thing I want is another surgery. I really hope my VS is the last surgery I ever have.

I was automatically given them and at first questioned it but reading about it made me decide to take them. I am not keen on another surgery either and want to keep my gall bladder. I take one in the morning, one in the evening, and will continue during my extreme loss phase.

I have ursosiol 300 mg. Are you supposed to take yours twice a day as well. I'm overwhelmed with this, prescription prevacid, well utrin, two Multivitamins and a b complex pill. Lots of pills for this 20 something who was only on one pill pre-surgery! Freaks me out this one can damage the liver! Oh well at least all but the Vitamins and wellbutrin are temporary (at least I hope the prevacid is)

I take them, too. Twice a day, huge giant tablets. :P I have to take them for six months, so I'm just being a good little patient and doing so. I am keen to keep the parts I still have left...

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair. Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end. That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
