How long of a diet did you have to do for your insurance?

Recommended Posts

I didn't have to do a diet prior to approval!! some insurances require 3-6 months nutritional counseling/Diet. But I was lucky and got approved after all the other preop appointments were accomplished! (2 months from initial seminar) Good luck on your new journey!!

I had insurance cover my lap band and for that I had to have 6 dietician visits and they were to occur on a monthly basis. They had to be consecutive too, if I missed one I'd have to start all over... TG I never missed one!

Anyway I think 6 months is pretty common, at least that is the majority that I hear. Some do 3 months and some even do up to a year! Good luck!

My insurance didn't require any pre-op diet. However, my surgeon recommended a liquid diet two weeks before surgery because this decreases the size of your liver and prevents from any interference during the stomach operation. Good luck!

I had the option of a 3 month, diet, exercise, doc...extreme program or a 6 month diet, doc program.. I opted for the 6 month only because I didn't have enough money for the program fee for the 3 month option. Of course, the 6 month option is only 5 months of dieting because they count your first visit as one of the six. So it hasn't been as bad as expected.

Fortunately I didn't have to do a pre-op diet either to get approved. I have Aetna, but I'm also a revision patient and I was able to demonstrate complications and why the previous WLS failed.

A week from Monday, I leave for my surgery.

I think 6 months is the norm. I had to do 6mo with my doctor and like Diva said they had to be consecutive.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
