About the Incentive Spirometer...

Recommended Posts

So I just got my surgery date and I'm set to be sleeved on June 14th (the day before my birthday!). I was told to use a volumetric incentive spirometer ten times a day, every day during these two weeks leading up to my surgery. Does this mean that I do a certain number of "reps" 10 times a day? Or do I just suck on it 10 times a day? If I only suck on it 10 times a day, do I do it all at once or spread it out over the day? Sorry if this seems lie a dumb question!

My NP suggested we do it 10 times a day as well - 10 reps each spread over the day. (Like do one set of 10 rep per hour.)

Good luck!!!

I didn't get mine till after surgery, so you getting yours ahead of surgery is great. I was told to do 10 reps approx every hour for two weeks. I did it for one week because I was back in the gym the second week. And I did suck (vs blow) on mine as well.

Mine is sucking too. And let me tell you, after surgery, when you have gas pains, IT IS HARD TO DO!!! OMG it hurts!!

Mine was ten times repeatedly an hour, every hour while you are awake after surgery. I did it more because I could barley get it to stay up because I hurt so bad. My dr. was worried about pnumonia, so I worked at it.

Good luck with your surgery!!

Kelly :)

Thanks everyone! I guess I'd better step it up. It's harder than I expected it to be!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
