Question for Post Ops!

Recommended Posts

I know with RNY their stomachs make some pretty strange noises and they can have some really offensive smells coming out of them. Is this true for VSG too?

No smells but I do have a gurgly, rumbly tummy at times! Totally worth it. It can play a Brahms lullaby for all I care as long as I continue to lose weight!! ;)

No smells....

Remember that for the most part our digestive process is NOT changing. Part of the reason RNY folks struggle with gas issues is that they lose a tract of intestine where a lot of absorption and digestion takes place. Without that track food matter moves along undigested causing gas issues.

My gas post-op is no different than the gas I experienced pre-VSG. My stomach also never makes funky noises, and I don't really recall it making horrible, embarrassing noises either. It's been nearly 2 years so it's kind of hard to remember if my stomach made noises the first few weeks. I can tell you that any gas I experience now is directly related to the type of foods I eat. Broccoli is still a gassy food for me. If I carb load during a meal, I get gassy, but it's no more foul smelling than it was before VSG.

This may be weird but I think my gas smells way better than it did before surgery lol. Idk if it's because of the change in foods that I eat or what. I burp alot as well. I had hiccups for the first time surgery a couple weeks ago and that was weird and hurt.

The 'burping' and the stomach 'rumbles' are completely normal. They are part of the adaptation the body is going through after the surgery.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
