Stomach looked more like a dumbbell than a sleeve in barium swallow picture.

Recommended Posts

I went for my 3 month post op appointment today. The doctor had me do the barium swallow to check for restrictions since I have had trouble with solid meat. The doctor said there are no restrictions. I got the see the shape of my new stomach and I think it looks more like a curved dumbbell than a sleeve. There is a pouch below the esophagus, then the sleeve part curves to a smaller pouch just before the pylorus. Now that I have seen it I can understand why I get full so quickly on meats. I really need to work on eating smaller bites of meat so it can get through the narrow sleeve in between the two pouches.

Huh. Interesting. I feel like I have funnel inside of me especially when I drink really cold Water. I feel it in the top of my stomach and know I can't take another swallow until I feel it in the bottom of my stomach haha

I am interested is the reason why this happened. Did the stomach just heal that way? Did your doctor use a bougie to guide the shape of the pouch???

Hope you continue to tolerate food and feel well.

I wonder too if the x-ray actually showed the 3D view of your stomach, I mean it may look like a dumbell from the front but does it bulge out front to back at the top and bottom - something that might not show on a single x-ray view? That would mean the stomach is simply potato shaped and bulges out in different directions. It seams to me that on an empty stomcah it would be kind of relaxed nd may show up this way as the center sort of draws up??? Maybe?

The surgeon took several different views and said it looked "beautiful", so that's good I guess. I am sure I stretched out the top of the stomach a little by overdoing it, but also it could be what is left of the fundus. The bottom pouch is deliberate I think so there are enough nerve endings to activate the pylorus. I agree that an empty stomach might look smaller in the middle if it is flattened front to back. I probably expanded the top because I gulped the barium and some air got in.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
