Low BMI and still having VSG

Recommended Posts

I had my plication at BMI 30, which seems to be the lowest BMI people operate on (both Mexico and Belgium operate at 30). I was told that if I weighed in at BMI 29.9 it wasn't going to happen, no way, no how. I tried chugging Water just to ensure it was BMI 30 but kept having go to the bathroom, so don't bother with that technique.

Just make sure you qualify before paying your deposit, as I gained ~30lbs in 2 months (I'd just crashed out of doing WW and another diet for 12 months) and assumed the weight increase would continue, but it seemed to top out at the BMI 30 mark but I was scared of going higher.

I was very borderline and it's not a game worth playing, so make sure you're really eligible. Note I'm not advocating gaining to qualify though, if you're at a BMI of 27 stay where you are. The weight doesn't just magically drop off and you still need to work hard at diet and exercise.

BTW on the morning of surgery they were debating my BMI (it comes out differently on different sites), but I'd worked it out on http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/ which puts your BMI lower than the calculator on alli website. They were threatening to band me!!

BTW you can get a gastric balloon at BMI 28. Success, I understand, can be limited but you could investigate it.

All the best! smile.gif

Is "VSG info"- Avis, I live in London and want to go for the VSG option. The problem here in UK is that they will turn you down if you are a bmi 35 and lower. My current BMI is 31, has been much higher. It have been trying to keep it low lately. I am tired of my weight yoyoing. Any help about vsg for low bmi's like me?

What do you think about this Dr. Aceves? Does he take on low bmi patients?

I was a low BMI, but also had a lap-band to be removed. I went to Dr Aceves and he was great - I highly recommend him. I do think that they may have a requirement of 30 BMI if you do not already have a lap-band.

My BMI at surgery was 31.

Dr Roger Ackroyd in Sheffield does VSG @ BMI 30. The costs I got from www.wlsgroup.com last year were £8995. I think he's the only surgeon in the UK who operates @ BMI 30.

You've also got Dr Toon Sonneville who does VSG in Belgium for £7995 (again last summer's prices) in Brussels (handy for the Eurostar). You can get initial surgery consults in London for Belgium though.

Mexico seems to have a universal BMI 30 requirement for VSG.

Good luck! wink.gif

I started with a BMI of about 32. That gave me about 50 lbs to lose. Check out my ticker! I'm very happy. I self-paid so that was easy.

My bmi varies between 29 and 31. I'm going to dr Almanza. He read my paperwork and said I qualified. Maybe he does it at a lower bmi than others ????

I know that doctors here in California will do vsg at a 28 bmi. Dr Cirengle in nor cal is the best in the state and did my friend last week. Her bmi was only 28.9. Too bad his price is 19,000. Thank goodness for our Mexican neighbors.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
