Is diet pop gone for ever?

Recommended Posts

Can you ever drink diet pop again once you are completely healed? Or should it be off limits for ever?

Some swear it off all together, however I like a can or 3 a week. I used to chug down a few liters a week but not so much any more. I find it harmless and enjoy the bittersweet taste of diet Dr. Pepper. I don't think the carbonation can effect your stomach enough to matter. If it triggers intense sweet cravings then perhaps you'd better lay off it.

Like most areas of this surgery, you'll get conflicting reports. I was told no carbonation ever. That being said, I will probably enjoy a beer again at some point in my life. However, soda is a different story for me. The bane of my dietary existence is/was Dr. Pepper. I freakin' love the stuff... nectar of the Gods and all that. When I drank diet soda it was merely a poor substitution for Dr. Pepper and it left me wanting the Dr. Pepper more- I was not one of those that thought diet Dr. Pepper tasted like the real deal.

I knew when I had this surgery that Dr. Pepper was my Achille's heel. I can't welcome it back on my life. And, diet soda is like my gateway drug.

I hope this perspective helps. Good Luck!

Amanda

Here's a big long thread on this topic:

There is zero scientific evidence that it will stretch out your stomach, or even an RNY pouch. It does leech Calcium from our bones, it is a filler Fluid, and some people get a lot of discomfort with soda early out. My standard reply is in the topic links I shared above.

I was told no carbonation ever again! When trying to quit Cherry Coke Zero cold turkey before my surgery, I would get Migraine withdrawal headaches. I think being on morphine for 3 days in the hospital helped me not get those nasty Migraines. I've now been off of Cherry Coke Zero for 2 weeks! I have had some caffeinated tea and it really bugged me--made me feel jittery. So, when at home, I'll make my tasty Luzianne decaffeinated iced tea and enjoy the taste!

my nut and doctor said it's not out of my life forever, but that it doesn't need to be diet, it just needs to be a bit flat before drinking it. Funny thing is, I always drank a tad bit flat sodas before the surgery because the carbonation hit me so hard, i'd get hiccups and burps all the time, so i would let it sit out for an hour or so. Or would choose low carbonation sodas (at least they felt that way to me: light colored sodas).

although nutritionist said i should wait a good 6 months before i start incorporating it in my diet and in moderation. I can honestly say that two weeks after the surgery, i have no craving for soda. I would like to not incorporate it back into my diet, so i'm gonna try my hardest to not drink it.

I was told I could have it "flat" if I wanted to, but there is really not much fun or joy in that (to me anyway!) So I quit cold turkey last Sept. and haven't touched the stuff since. For me it wasn't hard to do so I guess I wasn't a die hard addict to diet soda, I was a once a day type of diet soda drinker. Speaking of drinking, I also haven't touched alcohol since being sleeved and I have found that wasn't hard to do either. I guess it just depends on what works for you within your surgeon's guidelines. Good luck!

I drink a diet drink every now and then. I am four 1/2 months out. It doesn't bother my sleeve at all and I am still losing weight. Sometimes I just want to drink something with taste to it. I always make sure to get in my required Water, too.

I tried Sprite Zero just last week for the first time and I was okay with it. I drank only about a Cup over the course of an hour! I like that if I want to have a soda I can! I know I won't be drinking regular soda everyday ever again like before but the idea that if on occasion I want one then I can!

I personally tried it because my anniversary is coming up and I wanted to see how the carbanation was with my sleeve so that I can have a glass of Champange on my anniversary!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
