Question: Are sunflower seeds bad to eat?

Recommended Posts

Hello, My daughter plays softball and every game I see tons of people eating sunflower seeds and now I have a huge craving for them. Are sunflower seeds bad to eat with the sleeve? All opinions welcome.

Thanks,

Jennifer

They mush down to nothing, are typically loaded with sodium, but all that being said, I gnaw on hoards of sunflower seeds during my son's baseball games/practices. I wasn't allowed nuts until 3 months post-op. I do tank up on Water to help offset the sodium intake. But, I haven't had any issues with them.

I just looked up the nutrition info:

1/4 cup has 8 grams of Protein, but a whopping 205 calories. The saturated fat isn't bad and not a lot of carbs, so other than sodium and the calories they're not awful. You're far enough out based on your ticker (4 months?) that the texture shouldn't be an issue so if you can afford the calories, go for it. Maybe just a smaller serving?

This post brings back tons of memories biggrin.gif I played varsity softball for 3 years in highschool, We'd get teased about the gobs and gobs of sunflower hulls we left behind in dugouts. hahaha It's a softball tradition I think wink.gif

So I looked up pumpkin seeds too. 10% lower in calories per 1/4 cup - 186.6 vs 205.2. Pumpkin seeds are lower in overall fat but slightly higher in saturated fat. Carbs the same 6-7 grams, but in sunflower seeds almost 4 grams are Fiber, in pumpkin seeds, almost none are.

Yeah, I might be OCD.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
