Having Sleeve surgery May 2nd!!!!!!!!!!!!

Recommended Posts

I can't believe this day is around the corner already. I am super anxious and excited at the same time. I have to admit I have cheated my pre-op diet a couple of times but I have lost five pounds so far. Started my diet Last week Monday. Too bad I won't be able to have a nice dinner for my birthday on Thursday! :( But I guess that is part of the sacrifices we have to make to change the body we don't want to have. I don't know how much pain I will be in after the surgery and I am nervous about that. Did anyone struggle a lot with the pain?

I'm May 2, too!!! I am feeling all the same things you are.

Where is your surgery? Mine is at Baptist Hospital in Nashville, TN. I have to be there at 7:30 and I think the surgery is around 9:00 or so. How long do you have to stay? They told me to expect two nights.

How have you done with the pre-op diet? I haven't cheated, but I have dreams every night that I eat something horrible for me and then feel so guilty. But then when I wake up, I just keep chugging along.

What all are you taking to the hospital?

Sorry to bombard you with questions, but you are the first person I've seen on here who has the same date as me.

That was the first date offered to me, but I chose the week after because of my job. I need to be there the first week of the month!! I would be there with ya'll, but I will be a week later. Save room for me on the loser's bench.

Good luck to the both of you!!

Kelly ;)

Hi lkcraig316! I am happy to finally find others who share my same date! My surgery is at NY Columbian Presbyrian Hospital... New York, NY. My surgery is scheduled the same as yours and my hospital days are expected to be three nights.

I started my Pre-Op diet last week Monday and I completed an entire week without cheating but during Easter Sunday I cheated really bad! I felt so guilty eating and I encourage you not to cheat. If I could take it back I would. The Protein diet was giving me a lot of headaches so yesterday I spoke with my nutritionist and she recommended I do the modified diet...eating at least one meal per day. I have found this diet to be more reasonable and I don't feel hungry or like I need to eat. I think my brain just needed to think that I actually ate something.

I am taking slippers and a comfortable sleeping gown. That's it! I hear the first couple of days are painful and you will be mostly in and out of sleep because of medication. So I figure the less I take the better. I also use a CPAP machine to sleep because of my sleep apnea. So they recommend I also bring along my mask so that I am more comfortable with mine.

Don't worry about asking. I am more than happy to share what I am going through. It makes me feel more at ease.

How many pounds have you lost since your pre-op diet?

Congratulations on your big day and I wish you luck as well! I hope that we can both come back on here and tell you how we are doing before you go in for your surgery. Have you started your pre-op diet?

I was going to take pajamas, but after hearing what other people say I think I'll just take a robe and slippers. They have wireless internet there, so I plan on taking my Nook so I can read and check my Facebook, email and this site if I feel like it. I figured I might not sleep well at night.

I have lost 20 total pounds since I started the process in January. I have Aetna and it required a three month program before I could be approved for the surgery. I think I've probably lost 7-10 on the pre-op diet. I even thought to myself, if I can lose this much on my own, do I really need the surgery. But then I realize I cannot eat the rest of my life like I have been eating these two weeks. I would be miserable. And the temptation to fill my tummy would eventually win.

Don't worry too much about cheating. I think a lot of people do. I thought about just doing one more meal, but I realize that I am the kind of person that would turn that into one more dinner, one more lunch, one more Breakfast. Better to stay away from it completely.

Sounds like a good idea to take your Nook. I don't know if with the pain you will be able to use it all though. My co-worker had the gastric bypass surgery done about two months ago and she said she couldn't even sit up properly and that everything for her was painful, even using her fingers. Everyone's pain tolerance is different though and I hope because we are having the Sleeve surgery, that it is less painful than the gastric. Based on her experience she said the first couple of days she regretted doing the surgery because of the pain but now that she is all better she will not take it back for any pain in the world. She has lost almost 50 pounds in two months!!

And you are right... I have the same problem with food. For easter Sunday I was just supposed to cheat during lunch but eventually I also cheated with dinner. I felt so guilty on Monday and got right back on track.

Congratulations on your weight loss!! You have lost a lot on your own! Have you been exercising along with the diets? I still haven't started working out but Ive been doing other things to compensate at least a little like walking fast, parking further, taking stairs and doing a lot more cleaning around the house to keep me moving around throughout the day. I have also been drinking 2.5 liters of Water throughout the day and you will be surprised to find out how much walking you get done every time you have to run to a bathroom! lol

biggrin.gifblink.gifWow Kelly that is amazing!! 60 pounds!!!!!!!!!!!!! Way to go!!!!!!!!!!!! Congratulations! I know you must be so proud of yourself. Ive only lost 5 pounds but it's a start . I hope you reach your four pound goal before your surgery! Keep that will power going girl you are doing great!!!!

My insurance didn't require any weight loss or months of prep before my surgery. My only requirement is to work on shrinking my liver beginning two weeks prior to my surgery. But maybe it would have been a good idea to start early like you did. 60 pounds is a big difference!

I get my sleeve on May 2nd too! I started my preop diet last week and have lost 7.5 lbs. I am excited to get the journey started. I'm not nervous about the surgery or the recovery at all, but the magnitude of the life change that is coming and wiether or not I will be successful is a little daunting. I just don't want to fail this too.

I am taking pajama bottoms, my kindle and some ear plugs with me for my one night stay.

The pain from the actual surgery is not bad. The pain from the GAS that needs to get out of your system from the blowing up of your abdomen to the anesthesia gas is the WORST. I am one week post op and the gas pains still hurt. Do a lot of walking. Even though it hurts, the movement will work out the gas quicker.

i weighed 280lbs at my highest. when i started the bariatric program, i knew they would make me lose weight, so i started losing. i was at 262 when i had my first surgeon consult and he told me i had to lose 20 lbs. I knew i could do it, but i never dreamed I would lose 60!!

The pre-op diet is low carb, low fat, high Protein. It is not that bad becuase it is very well balanced. I like it.

It is something that makes it easy to stay on. Now, I have strayed a time or two, but mostly, I stay on track!

Thanks for the well wishes.!! When I do have my surgery, I will have a very short goal of 55 to 60 lbs. That will make me VERY HAPPY!!

Best of luck!

Kelly B)

Hello All! My surgery date is May 2nd too! This preop diet has been a huge challenge for me and I feel much better knowing that I'm not the only one that have cheated. I was told to do a two week liquid diet, and needless to say, I haven't stuck to it. I do pretty well all day until around 5pm.... then i feel the need to have the extra. I hope i can take control of this situation because my time is very near... I was wondering why some ppl don't have to do the two weeks?

WOW so many of us- my date is May 2nd also! In Overland Park, Ks- Two week preop diet- so far I have lost 10lbs- but my preop diet is 2 Protein Shakes and a smart ones meal- and all the broth, Jello and liquids - I have went thru all that too- thinking- hey- I can do this I don't need surgery but like was said before- I couldn't keep this up- I have tried- many times lol - so HERES TO US! Wish you all the best!! Cant wait to see how you all do!!

AND

I did cheat on Easter- but not to bad- I just had ham and greenbeans and a roll - but then like said before that turned into a corndog and corn chips later lol- EXACT REASON WE NEED THE SURGERY! But havnt gained anything back- and on track the rest of the time- so thats good!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
