I'm new here and not sure if this is the proper place to ask this question . . . but I'm asking it!

I had an emergency c-section last year . . . and after the pain medication wore off . . . I must say . . . sitting up, getting in and out of bed . . . pretty much any movement in the bed hurt like I never imagined it would.

I was wondering if anyone else here has ever had a c-section, and how does the pain of the sleeve surgery compare with the pain of a c-section? It might help me put this in some kind of perspective.

C-section can't be done laprascopically . . . lol . . . so I had a big ol' multi-layered incision that had to heal, too. I think that if I can survive that . . . which I clearly did . . . I can probably survive the sleeve surgery!

Thanks!

Shanna

Don't worry, you'll be fine! There was no comparison between my C-section (mine was emergency also) and the sleeve. I mean, it will be sore when getting up and turning to the side, etc. But for me, it was nothing like my section or my open hysterectomy a few years later. The worst pain I felt, was from the cO2 gas. In fact, I was up walking the halls a couple hours after surgery.

I think if there is any real pain, it will only be the first few days and you will be getting the good drugs for those days anyway!

You can survive this. No worries!!smile.gif

I had a abdominal hysterectomy a few years back--I think that would equate well to a C-section. I also had a lot of pain afterwards--I waddled for two weeks! The sleeve surgery was a breeze. The doctor put me on PCA (patient-controlled analgesia) so I could use it as much as I wanted. My main problem in the hospital was having to lie on my back for two nights and two days. My back was killing me. So if you can turn over to your sides it helps, but that hurt. I ended up sleeping sitting straight up in bed, with a pillow on the bedside table in front of me. That was better. Make sure the doctor gives you a prescription for liquid Lortab or something like it to take home. As my son laughed, "Lortab for the win!"

Don't misunderstand--the sleeve surgery did hurt, but nowhere near as bad as the hysterectomy did. Hope this helped.

In my opinion and experience the c-section was ten times worse than the sleeve surgery. I was lucky too though with my sleeve I didn't have any of the gas pains that some had.

The sleeve surgery was the only surgery I've ever had and it was SO much easier than I expected. My greatgrandmother had a gastrectomy for cancer about 20 years ago, and it was an open surgery back then. She could barely get out of bed for a month, it was a brutal recovery. But I was able to walk down the hallway and back two hours after waking up from anesthesia. I did have SOME pain, of course - the first night I had trouble sleeping because of it, so I requested some pain meds, but that's about it, it wasn't so painful that I was breaking into a sweat or anything like that. On my 2nd night, I slept just fine with the normal amount of meds. The only time I really had any pain during the day was when I moved, esp. sat up, but I would compare that pain to the soreness you have after a really hard ab workout. It's uncomfortable to move, but it doesn't really prevent you from doing anything, it's just a nuisance.

Thanks for the replies on this! I'm pretty sure that I will be going though with this even if you told me it would be worse than the c-section . . . but it's good to have a comparison. I am expecting pain . . . but having an expectation of what it might feel like helps!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.
