List of things to get

Recommended Posts

Hello all. My sleeve is scheduled for May 3rd here in Indiana, and I'm wondering what I should bring to the hospital, as well as what items should I have in my house for after surgery besides Clear Liquids and Vitamins? I'm sure this has been discussed somewhere already, but the search tool isn't cooperating with me right now. Thanks y'all

Hit the food/recipe forum for the place to order samples of Protein powders.

As for stuff to take to the hospital, I believe in packing light, but to have some essentials to make the stay more enjoyable.

1) Chapstick, Blistex, lip balm of some sort (I know you're a man, but believe me, chapped, dry lips suck)

2) comfy undies, and lounge pants to wear home

3) I took my own slippers to walk in, non-skid bottom

4) I took some lotion, shampoo/conditioner all travel size

5) Toothbrush/toothpaste/mouthwash

I didn't take books or magazines, nothing to keep me occupied. There is typically a tv, and you'll be walking, sipping and sleeping so no need for all that other crap in my opinion unless you really like that kind of stuff.

As for stuff to have at home, it kind of depends on your diet progression.

sugar-free popsicles, broth cubes (so I could control the taste), Gatorade G2, those flavored herbal Decaf teas were lifesavers for me, warm fluids worked so much better. Cream Soups, greek yogurt, sugar free pudding packages (not the pre-packaged stuff, the powder stuff in the box)

Here's a link I send to everyone in the pre-op/prep stage:

A heating pad is pretty awesome for the gas pains, as is Gas X strips.

Best wishes ! ! !

Great information above by Tiffykins. Not much to add...but there is a thread on this forum specifically for what you will need and suggestions from other vsg patients.

Go to > FORUMS > scroll down to GENERAL SLEEVE SURGERY DISCUSSIONS > select OFFICAL WHAT YOU WILL NEED FOR SURGERY topic.

Best wishes on your upcoming surgery!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
