dealing with late night cravings while on pre-op liquid diet

Recommended Posts

So I'm a late night muncher, always have been. I'm concerned about dealing with my cravings during this next week of 100% liquids in prep for surgery.

Any tips or encouragment? last night I had a SF freezer pop which helped, but I'm thinking I'm going to have to start going to bed when the kids do at 8pm LOL

I am just on day 3 of the pre-op diet but it has gone much better than I was expecting. I make my days worth of Beriessential in a blender, I first have a big 'ol cup of Decaf with splenda and skim milk, I wait about 45 minutes and have my first of 4 servings of BE. I space my Protein drink out about every 4 hours, I drink Crystal light and a lot of Water throughout the day. My big treat, about 8:00pm, is 1 c. of Rachel Ray chicken broth, I add a dash of salt and a good hot white or black pepper bring it to a boil and then sip it out of a coffee mug. I can't believe this works for me but the hot broth completely takes away all my cravings. I should have prefaced this with the fact that I have never had an ounce of self control but I don't want any complications if I can help it! I may add in some caffeine free hot teas today, we'll see though. I know you will figure it out. I know it's probably easier for me too because I don't have children and my husband is cooking for himself. I work out of my home so I'm not tempted by other people eating around me. We can do this!!! What is your surgery date?

I really can't help except for offering my encouragement. I'm a little freaked out by this too...

I think together we'll all get through this. Cherrybell made me feel a little better, I hope she did for you too.

Thanks for the understanding Cherrybell! My Surgery is next friday April 22nd.

Had a good talk with my hubby about making meals for the family and that I think it would be best if he handled it so I can avoid any temptations. (tonight sucked LOL I made BBQ Turkey meatloaf baked potatoes veggie and salad and couldn't eat any of it! I had strained cream of broccoli Soup (aka essence of broccoli soup) w/ a scoop of Protein powder in it. LOL) It's going to take time I know. I'm going to try the freezer pop again tonight w/ some iced tea to sip on. If all else fails...well I'll be well rested!

ugh, I know exactly what you mean. The first night of me pre-op liquid diet, I went to be at 9pm!!! My normal/usual bedtime is 11-12pm.

I'm finding the liquid diet to be harder as I continue, and I'm only on the third day of 14 days!!! But like cherrybell mentioned, the broth is my favorite time of the day. I never realized how much I would enjoy broth. good luck!!

I dread the pre-op more than the post-op and the post op is for a lot longer! I was gonna try to sleep thru pre-op diet lol. I think I will probably live on sf popsicles, strained eggdrop Soup, broths, green tea, crystal light, sf Jello, and I have this stuff I got at Walmart called Alpine Diet spiced hot apple cider. If i can stand the taste I am going to add unflavored Protein Powder in a lot of this stuff. And try to stay away from any social events that involve eating. Haha. When my family eats i don't wanna cook it or even smell it so dinner may have to be my walking time or nap time lol. Whatever it takes, I'ma do it!! :hippie:

Hi apple saucy, I am at the end of the second day of pre op liquid diet and I feel your pain!! Can you maybe make your own ice pops out of the Protein Shake? ? Just a thought....

I hate the sugar free ice pops..sweets were never really my thing...my food of choice is salty stiff..so the broth is getting me through this...it is hard girl but I know we can do this! :D BTW, I am 5 days after you..

It is all about shrinking the liver, just keep telling yourself that, 'The smaller the liver, the less the pain will be and the smaller the scars.' Let it be your Mantra! Good luck, I start my liquid diet on April 25, and I am going to try to stay busy and active all those week nights! Good luck!

Everyone has told me that the two week liquid pre diet is the hardest thing of all. After all, after the surgery your smaller stomach makes it a lot easier to eat so little. and there is a reason for doing it- healing. Before it is like the essence of the worst of losing wieght that has haunted you fortever. I actually do think I will sleep a lot more, out of desperation.:( I am so jealous of people who do not have to do it- but I also do want to make it as easy for my doctor as I can . I'll be starting mine the day after Easter. Sigh.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
