12 days post op, help with hunger issues!

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

First time posting here. I'm 12 days out since the operation and am feeling really hungry these days. I'm sure it doesn't help that I am cooking for my 2 yr old twins and husband daily. At first it didn't bother me, I said "oh I can do this, not so bad". Now, all of the sudden it is driving me crazy! Yes, I was one of those Mommies who would clean up the babies plates when they didn't finish. A few bites of hot dog or chicken nuggets, fruit, tortilla you name it. If it wasn't enough to wrap up I'd finish it off. Also, the shakes and Soups are not filling me up, and am really looking forward to the puree stage! Is it just me or have others had this issue?

You are not alone! I have been hungry since about a week out from surgery, and it's the smells from making food for my kids and husband that get me the worst! But we knew this would happen, and it's not much different from a regular diet. It's about making the choice to say no and lose weight. Lucky for us, even if you decided to eat you would fit very, very little in your new little tummy. Not that you should, but that is the point of this surgery. Once you move to mushie stages it should help with the hunger issues. Try to stick with Protein mushies. The shakes don't help with my hunger much either, but a piece of cheese, a little bit of egg, or some canned chicken with light mayo has helped me a lot with hunger. It will get better!!

I found at that point it was acid that felt like hunger. I'd have a few sips of milk or something alittle thicker and that tended to help. It's also your head telling you that hey! You normally eat that!! Find something to do with your hands to keep them busy til your head shuts up. It's a challenge to change those habits but you need to do it to succeed long term. I'm 5 weeks out and I'll tell you it gets way better once you can start mushies and solids. Just hold on. You can do it!!!!

Once you start having real food you won't feel so hungry and eventually you will be able to eat what you cook the rest of your family. Good Luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
