So i was banded not too long ago .. the 8th of April .. woo hoo. So far everything seems to be going well i am scheduled for my first fill on the 10th of May *nervous and excited*. I just don't know about the amount i am eating. It seems like at first i could only eat a very small amount and now i can eat a considerable amount .. I mean i'm certainly not eating huge meals or anything but more than i should i think and then about an hour or two later i am hungry again .. so this definetly cannot be good. But i hope the filling will solve this problem?! I was just wondering if this was normal or if my band has slipped or what?! Thanks!! This site is so awesome and helpful!!

<3 always, Brooke

Hi Brooke,

Congratulations on getting banded!! Rest assured, what you're feeling is perfectly normal and nothing to panic about. As your stomach heals and swelling goes down, whatever post-op restriction you felt is going to naturally disappear, and when that happens hunger returns. From this point on you probably won't feel restriction until after a fill, and possibly not even until after an adjustment or two.

DON'T WORRY!! You're on your way and this is just the first step of the learning curve. Welcome to bandland! :(:D

Shoot, now I'm confused. I thought my initial band would be good for at least a year or so before needing a fill. Are you saying I'll need a fill a month later?

Where did you get the impression that the band would work for a year without a fill?

It is the rare person who can utilize the band effectively without a fill, once the healing stage is over (6 weeks minimum). You may be one of those lucky people that don't need a fill right away, but I certainly wouldn't count on it. I had four fills my first year.

Does this mean I have to fly to Mexico every few months for a fill? I doubt any local doctors would fill me due to malpractice issues. What do fills cost? That plus airfare? Eeek.

I dont know where your from but more and more doctors and doing the banding.

Fills cost anywhere from 100$ to 350$ depending on the type of fill. Doctors office vs. a radiology visit.

I just looked up and saw your from San Diego. I believe there is a doctor there that does the banding.

Dr. rumBaut from Monterray mexico worked with him on a patient that had something go wrong. I'll try to find his name for you.

DeLarla, there are many people banded in Mexico who have managed to find US doctors for fill and followups. I hope someone will be able to point you in the direction of one, or maybe Inamed might have some ideas for you. But the bottom line is yes, you will need a fill or even several if you want your band to be its most effective.

I too wonder where you heard that the band is "good for a year" without a fill?

Ok, it was in san fransico.

The name Dr. Peterson came up in the report but it did not say what his actual roll was in it.

It was Dr Yuri that Dr Rumbaut worked with to re insert a band.

So, try finding on in san fran sisco,, Cheaper to drive then to fly.

The money-hungry Vegas doctors said you might not need a fill for a year! I recently inquired locally (Vegas) about weight reduction surgery. The doctors here require you to first attend their seminar. About 200 people showed up, and we learned the two techniques they offer: LapBand vs. surgical bypass. They gave the pros & cons on both surgeries. They didn't try selling one surgery over the other, but as far as fills, they said some people need them while others can go as long as a year. They never mentioned you might need one 6 weeks post surgery. Meanwhile, my friend had her band placed in October. She's lost 60 pounds and is just now wanting a fill. That's a good five months for her, while I've heard others needing them after only 6 weeks.

Also, she told me there's a P.A. that flies to Vegas and does fills here. But he doesn't do the fluoroscopy because he goes right to your hotel room (or my house, I suppose.) He charges $200. I guess it's worth the trip to Mexico. Thanks for the info.

May I ask.... how much has everyone lost? And when were your bands placed? Thanks!

All of my research pointed to the NORM being at least one fill about 6 - 8 weeks post-surgery. The band is designed to work when it is at least partially inflated with saline; without the saline there's no guarantee at all of any restriction.

I've had two fills since surgery, the first about two months post and the most recent in February. I'll probably get another one in May or June. They're painless; the worst part indeed would be paying for them.

I haven't read every word, because I'm trying to get to an appointment, but...

If there is a doctor ANYWHERE who says that it takes a year until you need a fill, I'd avoid him. First because he's wrong. And second, because he sounds like he has an imagined "ideal schedule" and won't be too fliexible.

Rumbaut is wonderful (and about $10,000), but you will have to get adjustments (fills and UNfills). To get to Rumbaut from Las Vegas, Aviacsa (not Avianca) Airlines has (had?) a non-stop flight and was very reasonable.

ALSO, Rumbaut suggested that Cirangel in San Francisco might do my adjustments. I haven't been there, but...last I read anything about him, Cirangle was about $12,500, for the surgery and a fill or two.

Finally, there are many cities in Mexico. And many surgeons, many of whom do adjustments on the patients of other doctors, both US and Mexican. So, you can get adjustments in Tijuana. Many patients drive to the border and cross into Tijuana for adjustments.

There are options.

Also, you wrote "original band." Unless something goes wrong, we each have only one band.

I had my surgery in August and have had 2 fills 1 unfill and then 1 fill again. But, my friend that had the surgery the day after me had a fill and then had to have the whole thing taken out. Her band is empty and her food still gets stuck. So there is that 1 in a million chance that you may not need a fill.

Hi,

Don Mills at INAMED told me to go to www.lap-band.com to find surgeons and fill doctors. I can't imagine you will have to go too far to find someone since lots of doctors seem to be jumping on the WLS band wagon.

Good luck with your search. My first fill is next week, 10 weeks post-op, and I desperately need it. I'm eating almost as I used to - how sad. My sister was banded when I was, and she's going for her second fill, 10 weeks post-op. We're both so ready to begin losing weight with our bands. We attend monthly support group meetings where most of the attendees are bypass patients. At 8 weeks post-op, they're usually about 50 pounds down. As we go around the room introducing ourselves, it's hard to say, "I have an empty band; so, I haven't really started losing weight yet." The people who run the meeting don't really get the fact that the two processes are different. The fills are EVERYTHING! Can't wait!

Good luck to us all, candy

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
