When can I have bread?

Recommended Posts

I'm now on the soft food part of my diet, and I was wondering if bread counts as soft foods. I want a taste of bread so bad. It can be wheat bread or whole grain for all I care. I know white bread is out. That's so sad. Just wondering when you started eating bread, if at.

it's not going to feel good at all and make you feel bad. If it's not on your list don't have it yet and when you go to the doctor next time ask when you can have bread. . . I still have problems with it and I'm out 14 months

For me (I'm 8 weeks out from surgery) bread is pretty much the only food I've tried that really gives me discomfort after I eat it . I am coming to accept that it may be many months or even years before I can eat bread (or maybe never again). But, as a total bread lover pre-VSG, I can also say the longer I go without bread, the more OK I am with not having it. I hope that is the same for you!

I was served a small piece of crustless bread for Breakfast one day in hospital, it went down fine for me.

Of course, by now I'm discovering that everything goes down fine for me. So I have a sleeve of steel or something.

Wait till about 6 weeks out. Everyone is different but commonly it is more like Thinoneday describes, it'll fill you up fast and make your tummy hurt if you put anything in on top of it - or it on top of an already full sleeve. Would saltine crackers satisfy your craving? I eat a few a day to quell stomach acid.

No matter what you do remember the mantra; Protein FIRST carbs SECOND. Eat your Protein first THEN if you have any more room try bread or other carbs. We've only got a limited amount of room to put food in and we have to get the BEST calories in FIRST.

I was told only toasted bread is good as the soft bread absorbs Fluid and can really be hard to digest. From what a couple of you mentioned it seems true!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
