I have gained over 130 pounds over the past 6 years due to ankle surgery and injuries. I am debating with route to take with having the Sleeve or Bypass surgery. I am 40 years old and almost 280 pounds and have bad ankles for life. Any suggestions from anyone?

The sleeve is much less drastic, and doesn't limit the types of food you can be eating. However, it does get about the same results as the bypass without al lthe negative side effects. The sleeve can always be turned into a bypass down the road

Latest studies say the Bypass looses more weight, but I would look at the whole picture.. Most everyone here went with the sleeve because their Doc recommended it or they did their research and found out about all the negatives of the bypass. I just didn't want the future of nutrient decencies or my guts rerouted.

My Mother went with the bypass some 6 years ago and has lost 80% of her excess weight and kept it off. She can eat most things (dairy gives her some trouble though) but has constant Vitamin deficiencies, Migraines, and Constipation issues. After doing my research and seeing what she went through, I decided on the sleeve for myself.

However, its only fair to mention she says the bypass was the best thing she ever did and if given the choice today she would still go with the bypass.

You say you have bad ankles? Do you take any sort of pain medication for that? Particularly NSAIDS???

The reason I ask is that those types of medications are off limits after a bypass. The sleeve has no such restrictions and that is why I recommend the sleeve if you have a need to take medications afterwards.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
