Can you exercise while being on Optifast?

Recommended Posts

I'm on Optifast 800 calorie-a-day for three weeks. The first week went fine. I feel like exercising for the next 2 weeks until surgery day. Is there any risks involved by exercising while on this diet?

Thanks.

The only risk is going all out and then getting hypoglycemic - 800 calories is not a lot. So I would stick to stuff that's more low-impact like walking or swimming. Intense workouts can make you quite hungry, which may make sticking to the diet more challenging!

Thanks for the good point. But this makes me wonder now, because 800 calories is what I was expecting to maintain post op. AFAIK, most sleevers eat between 700-1100 calories a day.

You are so lucky that you only have to do for 3 weeks. I am into week 2 of a 7 week pre-op diet.

It will be much harder to do pre-op as you still have a large stomach and you still get the hunger hormone. Yes, you can exercise, it's never a bad idea to get used to doing this now. But, keep it lighter because you will def get hungry very easy.

Post op you can deal with the lower calories, you won't be hungry probably ever if anything. That is a blessing from the surgery you have chosen! Good luck to you!! You can do anything you really put your mind to. :) PS I workout a lot - and I get in anywhere from 1,000 to 1,400 per day on these days. I only eat less on days I don't workout.

Thank you so much for the advice. I think I'm going to stick with walking for now and maybe some light weight lifting.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
