New Scale -- Uh Oh!

OK, so I have this scale that likes to change its mind depending on which foot I use to step onto the scale. and I was thinking it's probably not that accurate anymore. So I ordered a nice new digital scale that was recommended for its accuracy, and it was just delivered today.

Boo hoo! The new scale says I weigh nearly 3 lbs. more than my old scale! So now I am in the unenviable position of having to revise my weight upwards instead of downwards! ohmy.gif

I am SO bummed. Now let me ask, should I revise my starting weight upwards by the same amount I am increasing my current weight in order to be consistent or just leave the starting weight as-is and suck up the unexpected weight gain as a result of getting a new scale?

I would just leave it as-is until your scale catches up with your ticker.

Personally I would change the starting weight as well as the current weight lost. After all, if you were using that same scale back when you weighed for the starting weight, it is wrong also. Seems like the most accurate way to do it! smile.gif

I would up the starting weight. You deserve credit for every pound lost!

Thanks you guys! I'm going to weigh again tomorrow and see if there is still that big a difference. If it is only 1 lb different I won't change anything but if it's two or more I will. I do like my new scale and in the long run a few lbs isn't going to make that much of a difference. My old scale only measured in .5 lb increments and my new one goes to .10 lb. Increments. Now that I'm past the first month post op I am going to cut back from daily weigh ins to once or twice a week. So lesson learned for preops -- buy your nice scale before surgery so you can avoid disappointments down the road!

I too have a scale issue; I use an old-fashioned doctor's scale, the kind where you have to move the big weight on the bottom and then the tiny weight on top, until the floating pointer on the right side balances in the exact middle.

I had been in a stall for 2 weeks and then my regular scale broke so I went another week without weighing. Then I decided to use a scale at the gym, also an old-fashioned doctor's scale. That scale said I had lost 10 lbs, hooray. This morning (3 days later) I stepped on my regular scale, which had been fixed, and it said I had only lost 3 pounds. =(

So, which one is correct? I make sure to "zero out" the scales before stepping on them, how can a scale like that be wrong? :(

Neither of the scales belong to me and I don't have a 5 lb weight available, one scale is in the medic's station and the other is at the gym.

scales suck! I inherited one from my mother, she paid a pretty penny for an electronic scale. Been stalled / stuttering for a few weeks now and when I got up this morning I FINALLY weighed 299.8 - HOORAY! I broke the 300 barrier. Well I went to the bathroom, did #1 and thought I'd see if that put me closer to 299.6, the dang thing went UP to 300.4! Apparently gravity doesn't kick in till after a few minutes after I rise :blink:

I think I'll shave my head, all the rest of my body, trim all my nails and make sure I go #1 AND #2 and see if it goes up AGAIN!

LOL Rootman! I can relate! I was less than 4 lbs. from ONEderland before my scale switch and now I'm 205.8 with my new scale so am fairly bummed. Instead of being within one week or so of ONEderland, I'm probably a good two or 2.5 weeks out now. :angry:

WooHoo! Couldn't resist and hopped on the scale again, FOUR times in a row it said 298 so I am FINALLY below 300 pounds! It's been a few years.

You're a lot like me. Except that I don't change it immediately. I give myself a chance to get back down to the original weight so I don't have to feel bad about changing my tickers. It's actually a really good motivational tool for me, and I need all the tools I can get. I do keep accurate records in my spreadsheet just so I can keep an eye on historical data though. Regarding my ticker however, if I stay up at all for more than several weeks though I do change my ticker.

Thank goodness for the sleeve, for I've never had to do this one time since my surgery!!! :D Before my sleeve was another story entirely!!!

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
