I am very new to this process. I have been talking to my primary doctor for two years about this surgery. I have been seeing him roughly every month until December. I was not able to get an appt. I am going tomorrow back to him. We have tried Meridia and low calorie diets over the years and my wieght has steadily climbed. I excerise daily for 30 to 45 min. I walk in the neighborhood. I am not sure that I can provide monthly documents. I think I can show alot of supporting documents for the last four years. I know alot of people have gone through CIGNA. Should I bring all of the supporting documents to my first visit with the surgeon? Should I start the 6 month process now all over again?(Since I missed December) I AM SO CONFUSED!!

Hi Golfbuddy,

Welcome to VST!!!

Though I'm not sure about your particular Insurance Provider - and I do hope someone with CIGNA will chime in to help out, I just wanted to say I do hope it all works out.

One thing I wanted to point out is you mentioned your Dr. had you on Meridia. Is there any way your PCP can pull up records with that? I would think that would be considered Medical proof for some amount of time you had tried to lose weight. Just a thought.

Let us know how everything works out! :)

My insurance requires six consecutive months of physician supervised weight loss. If I were to miss a month I would have to start over. Check with your insurance company for details.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
