When you ask a surgeon about leaks why does he always say that he has had only one leak?? I have read so many post here when they talk about their sugeons and their surgeons said that they have only had one leak too. I really hope these surgeons are that good. I know the statistics say that only 1% leak. Any commits??

More experience, less complications. I was my surgeon's first leak with over 300 staple lines, I was his first band to sleeve revision, but he had revisions with band to RNY(more complicated staple line) and band removals. I was confident in his skill. It was my particular situation with a horrible band, pain, and not knowing what was really going to happen once he got in there.

For me, 1000 VSGs performed with 10 leaks sounds HUGE, but statistically it's not. My main concern was death statistics. And, I don't mean deaths from anesthesia complications, or other general surgery issues, I mean deaths from sleeve surgery, crappy technique, slit livers, perforated bowels etc etc. That had me more concerned than a leak.

I was pretty prepared for my leak. I knew my risks quadrupled since I was a revision with a band that had really given me hell for 8 months. I place zero blame on my surgeon for my leak. He repaired it, and I'm here today, living proof that the sleeve works, and any struggle can be overcome.

It's one of those things that you have to trust your surgeon's skill, and know you're in good hands.

From my research, I found that leaks were caused more by the patient than the dr or the procedure. There is a reason there is a strict diet. My dr has one of the more strict diets from what I have seen on these boards....1 wk Clear Liquids, 2 wks of full liquids, 3 wks of mushies and by wk 7 you can start eating small portions of other food. My dr told me that as long as I followed the diet, then I shouldn't have any leaks. But, if I ate foods to early, then I could pop my staple line and land myself in the hospital with a leak. He told me that he had one patient try and eat a hamburger in wk 2, popped his seam and went back in. So, I am at day 24. I just started my mushies and I have not had any problems, but I am a rule follower. I also haven't had any problems staying n the diets once I got past the clear liquids. You just aren't that hungry and when you do have a Protein Shake or Soup, it takes a long time to get it down. Hope this helps.

Wow thanks for the comments on this issue. Your truely right tiff I am more concerned of the death part of it..Leaks can be fixed death is permanent. I hope when I go in that I don't have to deal with either one..

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
