Having sleeve gastrectomy through Kaiser, West Los Angeles in one week. Have to say, feeling nervous, and a bit hesitant. Having a tough time tolerating Protein Drink already, so I am wondering how well then, the post -op is going to be. Could use some advise of how to get down 70-100 grams of Protein a day?

Also nervous about some of the post I've been reading on post op nausea and vomiting for unknown reasons. Like all of you, my life certainly can't tolerate that kind of Detour. Gulp....soe encouraging, yet honest words would be in order...

Thanks to all who have braved the path before me!

Don't worry about Protein too much in the early weeks just concentrate on getting your liquids in. I was in hospital for 3 days after surgery and was given camomile tea, Jello, apple juice and broth (so zilch for protein). Once you're allowed full liquids and mushies Protein is a lot easier to get in. I'm 4 weeks out and haven't had any Protein drinks as I can't have powdered anything (especially milk).

eggs, yogurt and particularly Greek yogurt are good (Greek yogurt has 9 grams of protein per 100 grams as opposed to 4.5/100 grams in regular yogurt). I just aim for 60 grams of protein a day as advised by my surgeon and good ol WLS for Dummies! wink.gif

I get my Protein from Carnation Instant sugar free Breakfast drink, mixed with skim milk and 1/3 c of dry milk gets it up to 21 grams. I can find it as french vanilla and chocolate. I sometime add 1 Tbsp of sugar free Torina syrups flavors to change it up. I never had any nausea after surgery and I use to have a very sensitive stomach prior ( I would get sick even just thinking of taking a major trip).

You will be fine. I am loving my sleeve. I think the preop diet was the hardest for me, now I don't have any hunger and I have to remind myself to eat.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
