Does certain smells of food make you sick?

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering if any of you have had this same experience and if you think it is "female" hormones causing it or something about the sleeve. I have times where I sit down to a meal or am in the same room where a meal is being prepared and I get sick from the smell. I was having grilled shrimp which I truly love, and couldn't eat because of the fishy smell. We were at a very nice seafood and steak restaurant so the food should have been apealing. Another time recently I was eating the inside of a taco and had put a little mild hot sauce on it. This smell made me sick as well. Is this normal? I have only been eating solid foods for nearly 2 weeks and have started experiencing this. Therefore, I cannot eat. I haven't gotten sick from the too full feeling because I am scared to get to that point. But I have gotten sick from just the smell of foods. This is weird and was just wanting some of you who are further out than me to tell me if this is normal. Seriously at this rate, I think I will continue losing weight forever because it totally ruins my appetite. I am going through a time which food seems unappealing to me and I have never been like this before. I have always loved food!!

My sense of smell was extremely hypersensitive post-sleeve. Baby powder made me vomit, just the slightest hint of baby powder and I was puking up my guts. Foods definitely made me want to hurl. It does get better, but it took a few weeks for things to settle for me.

Nasty fried food smell makes me nauseous. I've always hated fried food, but now I feel sick just walking by a McDonalds and catching a whiff.

ASOLUTELY!!! Today we had our big office Christmas lunch and they catered in all this food. One was a huge tray of fresh jumbo shrimp, which I normally loved. I took one, and tried to eat it and I almost threw up at my desk.. yuko.... gross and fishy. Later, the smell of the fishy shrimp cause me to have to leave work early.

Just, in general, food smells unappetizing to me, and my tastes have changed. I am only 2 weeks out, and some of the more experienced sleevers say this will go away. Hope so. Also, I used to love coffee, and now it is just too bitter for me.

I wonder if it is because they move the "Gerlin" part of the stomach during surgery, and maybe that's where our "yummy smells" center was located. Too bad... but who cares?

Well, thank heaven for unjury powdered Protein, its about all that I love anymore!

I have also noticed that smells seem to be more apparent to me. When I walk by the stove where I had cooked my egg for Breakfast, I could smell the egg on the skillet and spatula and I had never noticed that before. Also, when I am eating and I eat a little too much for my tummy and I don't feel good, I have to get the rest of the food away from me so I can't smell it. Even an empty plate smells if it is sitting next to me and makes me feel worse.

Well from all your responses it does appear that this is part of it. Glad to know some others are affected. After rereading my post and your answers, I was thinking that this is alright and I will deal with it. At least we are still losing weight. :-)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
