Port Infections

Recommended Posts

I thought you all might like to know there was a recent article published about port infections. For years with infected joint replacements, orthopedic surgeons have been utilizing antibiotic beads to cure infection. Some surgeons much smarter than me had the idea to try it with infected ports and it worked in almost all cases. I tried it once a couple of months ago and it worked like a charm. The reason I'm bringing this up is that I don't think a lot of band surgeons are aware of this, and it could save you the hassle of having to have your port removed and then go back later for a port replacement!

Spread the word bandsters!

Do you use one particular antibiotic or several in this treatment regime?

What you do is mix an antibiotic into joint cement, and you make little beads about the size of a pea, and you make them around a piece of suture, sort of like a shishkabob. You leave the beads in and pull them out one-by-one.

I'm attaching a PDF of an abstract from the article.

My husband has had several surgeries in the past few months to remove infected bone form his hips and they have always put the antibiotic beads in the cavity before they close him up. They are awesome!

WOW! THANK YOU SO MUCH DrC!

Port infection is my biggest worry with the band - I seem to be obssessing about it. Your information is much appreciated and I finally feel like I can relax about it. A little. lol

Thank you, even a little relief from the worrying is a huge release of stress for me.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
