% of stomach removed

Recommended Posts

Just curious, do you know what % of your stomach was removed? I see many people say their doctor removed 85%; however, I was reading in a notebook my doctor sent me home with that he removes 75% of the stomach.

Anyone know what difference this can make?

I wonder if this can affect the amount of food you eat?

I was going to ask my doc how much he took out, but I never seen him (holiday) I just seen his partners the rest of my stay. I am going to ask him when I go for my check up this week.

Our "group" was told at the seminar that he removes approx. 85% of the stomach, that we'd be left with a 3 oz tummy. I have a copy of the surgical notes and he did a size 32 bougie.

My doc says I was left with a 3 oz stomach. Not everyone starts with the same size stomach, so in order to be sized to the relatively standard 32f or 36f bougie, then it would be a different percentage for everyone.

Everyones stomach is differet sizes tobegin with so what you are left with is based on what size bougie they use. So I think they just average it out to 75-85%

The final size also depends not only upon the bougie size used, but also how tight the surgeon wraps and sutures it.

My doc says he removed 80% and uses a 34-36 bougie. have no idea how much that is in oz of stomach left.??

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
