How long for recovery?

Recommended Posts

I was positive that I posted this question last night, but I sure can't find it now.

How long were you off work and what kind of work do you do? If you don't want to say specifically what your job is, how much sitting, standing, bending do you do?

I'm trying to plan this out and need a good idea of how long to schedule off work. I'm self employeed and book clients weeks in advance, so it's not like I can just call in a few extra days if I'm not up to it. I stand a lot and spend a lot of time bend slightly at the waist working on clients. I also go up and down the stairs a lot. When I first go back, I can schedule a break between each client but don't want to unless I have to.

How log till you were able to resume normal physical activities?

I have a job where if I am not traveling across the country, I am mostly sitting at my desk or walking around the office, so nothing really strenuous. I took 5 weeks off of work (I worked from home starting at week 4). The first two weeks for me were grueling but I think I had a tougher time than most. I couldn't hardly even walk since I had no energy at all. By day 14 I kind of felt human again but in no way could I have gone back to work. If I didn't have to drive so far to work (140 miles each day round trip) I could have probably gone back after 4 weeks.

But I have heard of others who were back after 1 or 2 weeks. Not sure at all how in the heck they were able to do that but clearly they healed much better than I did.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
