Single Incision VSG

Recommended Posts

Every since reading about the single incision VSG.....I really really REALLY want it done like this if possible. I will be going to my surgeons office next week so I can find out if he can perform a VSG with a single incision. I know he was trained for a single incision, but I don't know if it is for Lap Band only.

I would like to hear from the single incisioners.....where and what surgeon did you use?

I had the single incision VSG. But it wasn't single.....hahhaa I had a Q-ball incision also. A tiny cut that had a tube going in where they were able to put in pain meds directly at the site inside. It was less to take care of with the one 2inch glued shut and the small healing incision than 5 or more. I'm sure inside my stomach muscles were split open rather wide to put all the insturments inside. Lots of "learning" when healing with not using my stomach muscles, but rather glad i had it with only one incision.

I think it would be neat. I wonder if there's one up on youtube?

I just watched one on youtube. It's fascinating! Actually the first sleeve surgery video I've watched. I'd be a little nervous about bungee-cording my liver up like that, but hey... if my surgeon wants to do it, I would probably go for it.

Hello Motley;

Single incision surgery for VSG is done with a special tool called a SPIDER. Surgeon goes in through the bellybutton, inserts spider and then open up the three tools. Cost of surgery is higher, so you would probably have to pay the difference.

If you want to get an experienced surgeon, since technique has only been out for about a year or more, ask your doctor how many he/she has completed. To watch a video clip of how spider works, go to "The Doctors" TV show to see their clip on - Spider Weight Loss Surgery Explained. Link to this clip is below. No regrets on VSG...loving my sleeve.

PS - notice surgeon in the Doctors clip...he was my surgeon in So Cal.

      Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

        As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

        Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

        Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

      Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
