Do your tastes really change?

Recommended Posts

I've heard that your tastes may change after this surgery... is that really true? And if so, does anyone know why? I'm just curious about people's experiences on this one. Thanks!

There are some significant taste changes right after surgery. Like, anything powerful or overly sweet I would have to dilute to half Water to choke it down.

My taste buds have returned to normal since but now its my cravings that have changed. I'm 2 months out now. I actually think about eating healthy meals when I'm hungry. Like I don't think about what I want for dinner the night before while I'm eating last night's dinner. It's very interesting.

I don't like the super-sweet stuff anymore. I used to love milk chocolate (and various versions of it, e.g. with caramel), but now it's just too much. I'm more of a dark chocolate person now. Same with other sweets. I used to love all those Coldstone/Marble Slab-type ice creams with lots of mix-ins, but a few weeks ago I got one, and it was total overkill. I also find some things to be disgusting, e.g. those cafeteria sandwiches with luncheon meat and butter/mayonnaise on them. I'm a student and my friends and I always scavenge for free food at events. Last time we got some sandwiches and I had to spit them out, because they tasted so nasty to me - before, we'd eat them all the time.

Wow, thanks for the replies, guys! Frankly, I wouldn't mind it if I suddenly didn't like sweets :-). I just wonder why it happens...

I have had it happen to me after other surgeries. I hated eating chips for a year after I had my gallbladder out (taste was gross). Now my tastebuds are back. So I wonder if it has something to do with anesthetic in your system or what.

I asked my nut about this. She said it was pretty common from the hormone changes, but returns back to normal. I think it may also be from eating sf stuff for so many weeks. I remember when I stopped drinking soda and tried it again after several months and it tasted nasty.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
