You also have to take into account that they include people that didn't follow dr instructions.....no preop diet, smoking, etc. The deaths are probably mostly in people that are much higher risk do to risk factors not the actual surgery.

Please read this link that was posted elsewhere. The 1 in 200 data is seriously outdated and just plain wrong.

http://asmbs.org/benefits-of-bariatric-surgery/

I am disappointed that people are quoting ancient data, consider going to a bariatric center of excellence that has a real travk record and real numbers. My weight loss surgical center has done several thousand procedures and have only had 3 leaks ( much less deaths).

Also don't forget that every year you live with a BMI over 40, you have a substantial risk of dying from obesity related conditions. Being a 100 pounds over weight is dangerous, that is why they call a " morbid".

My father died at 91 after his podiatrist cut his toenails, nicking several of his toes. He became septic and died within 48 hours. Who would have thought?!?!?!

My brother who died of pancreatic cancer at age 51 always said, "You pays your money, and you takes your chances." Surgery is a risk from the beginning. Make your informed decision and stick with it, and don't stress yourself out living in a "what if" world. I'm in the medical field and probably know more about the risks than the average bear. I hope you will be able to go through the process with some confidence and come out on the other side without regrets. I have. Best wishes...Kathe

Read in the information leaflet that 1 in 200 die during or shortly after this operation' date=' this seems quiet a high number for me? Has anyone else read this? im asking this as i have my operation on 30th November and like everyone else im scared........ cant sleep, very tearful, and the fears are driving me mad...BUT yet i need this for ME mostly and then to see my children grow up ....... give me your comments and views thanks xx[/quote']

1 in 200 die with the bypass surgery, the sleeve is 1 in 1,000 which is another reason I chose the sleeve. My BMI was so I that I was at greater risk with a 4% chance of dying. I am a single mother and was scared to death but if I didn't have surgery I might not live long enough to raise my daughter. We take risks everyday in life so why not take a risk that will better our lives? I know I risk my life everyday when I get in my car, people can't drive! Good luck!

I was 386lbs the day of surgery Oct 5th yes 8 days ago. I'm alive and well had no complications. Preop I stopped reading all the negative and just had faith. I was so peaceful on the day of surgery until my husband couldn't believe it. I'm down 21lbs since surgery. Don't worry you're all gonna do very well

I'm one of the 1 in 400 who experienced complications in surgery and nearly died after surgery. I followed drs instructions to a T. I did a preop, don't smoke, no comorbidities, only 70lbs to lose, and I'm young and relatively active. Pre surgery I dismissed the risks just as Sarah did above. My advice, first, check your doc out carefully. And don't rely on that center of excellence goober. My center was one. See if you can find any deaths or complaints about the doc online (there are rating sites). Make sure they don't have any outstanding cases or complaints against their license, and for gods sake go to a real hospital for the surgery so that if a 1% issue arises when you are on the table, it can be addressed with all of the appropriate care necessary!

It really is important to consider ALL the risks involved, not just the death portion. I am 10 weeks out and I can't keep down food. I get between 100-200 calories a day, max. Not sure but it could be a kink in my sleeve, just the way my body healed. They tell you, "Death is a risk," but they never say "You could lose your ability to nourish your body." I ruined my life by deciding to do this surgery, honestly. Do your research, ask lots of questions, and do some serious soul searching before you decide to do this surgery.

Wow Abby, I''m so sorry to see this. I am also waiting to see if I will lose my stomach if the repairs don't hold but I'm able to get in more calories at least for now. It sounds like you need to be back in (or in) a good hospital to figure this out asap!

I have to agree with the regret you so clearly feel. I regret doing this to myself, putting myself in jeopardy when I have a child who needs me, and I had no health reason's to do it. I told my husband not to put "dying to be skinny" on my tombstone, but there was a time I wondered if he was going to have to consider that. I hope there is a fix for whatever has happened to your body dear. And that we both retain what's left of our stomach's.

I second all of this ... Never thought I would be the one with the leak and tons of complications that follow since I was so young and healthy other than being overweight and followed all the rules. Everything seemed to be going great the first two weeks after surgery but then the fever struck. Long story short I ended up nearly dead from a leak and was in the hospital for over a month with complication after complication. I am doing ok now , still have to be very careful. It was a nightmare. I am very blessed to be alive.

My story sounds a lot like yours (it's too many pages to read LOL but its in the story section ...what you don't want to know). As people can see here, complications do happen. I'm sorry you've had a similar story to mine sleevealicious. I wouldnt want my worst enemy to have gone through what I did and I'm sure you can probably say the same at this point. I'm glad you made it through!

Thanks, Iggy! I did read your story and it sounds just terrible. I am so glad that you made it too! I feel like the sleeve is portrayed as all sunshine and roses on here and I think people do need to read about the complications. I know before in had the surgery i just blew off the possibility of getting and major complications since I am young and healthy and mostly always saw good stuff on here. I definitely would not wish it on my worst enemy!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
