@@ckunes

hi there

i HATE the word ONLY

ie i ONLY lost 3 lbs

I ONLY do Water exercise!!

take that word out of your vocabulary!!!

sorry you temporarily tripped, slid off that darn horse :(

but i know you'll get back on program

60 lb weight loss - did that put you at GOAL?

do you remember ALL the rules you need to follow

water, Protein, carbs, portions etc???

get a jump start and do primarily liquids for a few days

doesn't do any good kicking yourself in the asssss!!!!!

it hurts too!!!

Diabetes I, terrible arthritis, 2 artificial knees

oh no!

gotta get back on the straight and arrow

follow drinking and eating rules NOW!!

you did it before, you can do it again!!!

good luck

My sleeve was done March 24 of this year and I am 65. My doctor told me most doctors make 64 their cut-off but he understood that my previous insurance wouldn't cover it. Medicare covers it and with my supplemental insurance it's costing me nothing. Although my energy levels aren't what I'd like, I'm feeling really good. I'm off my diabetes meds and probably will be off b/p meds soon. My attitude is that I would ha e had a miserable life and an early death if I didn't do this. Good luck to you!

I am new to this board but as I am 64 and waiting to complete all paperwork to apply to BCBS FEP for insurance coverage of revision from failed rny to sleeve I hope I am welcome here? I am scared insurance won't cover and even if they would normally they may just wait out the clock until I turn 65 and go on medicare in late October. Anything anyone can tell me about the sleeve would help my scared nerves to hear.

Can you actually revise a "failed RNY" (gastric bypass) to a sleeve?

I had no idea you could do that.

I've been lurking around and very, very occasionally posting so why did I miss the over sixties group! Everyone seems to be so young here, I couldn't believe I was alone, well here you all are and it's lovely to meet you. I'm 67, that's my calendar age but really it's rubbish. I feel more like 50 or so. After some gentle encouragement from my GP, I have type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure, I went to see the surgeon about 16 months ago with the intention of having a band. However I had to increase my health care cover and wait for 12 months before I could go ahead. To cut a very long story short, I'm scheduled for 16th May but decided to have the sleeve instead after reading some negative feedback about the band. I'm scared but excited at the same time. I want a new, healthier me going forward.

Carolyn,

I am 69 and had my surgery 3/28/16. Not seeing a lot of us older girls out there.

We are out here. I'm 65 and was sleeved on 11:18/15. It been 7 months and I've lost 84 pounds and gone from size 26-28 to a woman's large 18-20. Best decision ever! It's been easy and the cravings in my head have all but stopped. I don't keep a fat free, sugar free, carb free diet. I have a bit of cake at celebrations. Focusing on Protein first has really been the key. I love the variety in my diet and don't feel like I'm deprived at all.

I am 61 and had my sleeve surgery on May 10, 2016. 5 weeks out and down 25 pounds. So far I feel great and have no regrets.

@@Cathy48 I hope your surgery went well.

I am so happy to find that there are others in my age group. I am 62 and thought that I had waited too long to make the decision to have gastric sleeve surgery. I was relieved to have the doctor confirm that It is not too late. I am waiting for insurance approval and have started the ore-op tests in the meantime. Hope to have the surgery late July or early August.

Those of you that already had surgery, how long was your hospital stay?

I went to Mexico 7 years ago and got sleeved, revision from band. I was in the hospital 3 nights, but I didn't need to be. That's just the way they do things. I was out of my room most of the time, walking around outside.

Feel free to ask me anything.

Get that band out before it ruins your stomach and you can't get any kind of revision surgery.

I had my band out and got the sleeve in the same surgery, 7 years ago. i am 63 now. It was the best decision of my life. The sleeve works so well. I can still only eat small portions. Just like the sleeve though, candy is my biggest threat. The sleeve does not stop sweet cravings and unfortunately, most of them go down just fine.

I'm still fighting a 10 lb regain but at 7 years, I am thrilled that's all it is. It's harder to lose weight the older we get. It could easily be 20 or more, if I didn't watch things so closely.

It's 5 weeks today since I had my surgery and I'm pleased to say it went very well but the first 3 weeks of convalescence were truly awful. It was found that I had helicobacter post surgery which meant a week of strong antibiotics to get rid of it. The combination of medication and the helicobacter gave me awful foaming and heartburn. Some days I was totally laid up. After 3 weeks I seemed to have a breakthrough and I've been pretty good since apart from dreadful fatigue. I've lost a few ounces short of 21 lbs and am down a dress size. We weigh in Kilos here and I'm so close to being in double digits, just 2 kilos to go to see that magical figure.

I'm 62 1/2 and scheduled for the sleeve Aug 10th. I was approved by BCBS. I had to postpone this surgery from january until now. Just had to redo blood work and EKG. Other times I've lost weight, I've put a lot of effort into exercise. I've slowed down so much with age and weight. Still enjoy walking and biking, however, since my move to South Florida 8 years ago, I can barely stand the heat most of the year.

So with surgery mid August, I can only imagine the temperature outside and I know we need to walk quite a bit the first week or two. I'm hoping I can drive to maybe Target or Walmart which is only about 1 miles down the road vs. 12 miles to the shopping mall, to walk around in air conditioning so I get more of a walk than just walking in my house.

I bought an exercise bike, but must be honest, I've never used it and I look at it every single day. At least I refuse to hang clothes from it, lol. But I imagine it must be so much harder for us at this age to lose the weight and keep it off. I really want to lose the whole 100 pounds I need to lose.

Hi trekker,

I'm 64y/o, 6 months post op and live on the Gulf Coast with similar hot weather issues. My goal is to lose 90lbs, I've now lost 60lbs and I'm considered a slow loser....many seem to lose much faster. I've done really well with no complications or issues. The first 3 months I did a lot of walking and used my home Elliptical. My surgeon suggested I look into more "resistance" type exercising to speed weight loss.

I joined a Crossfit gym and began working with a personal trainer. Crossfit gyms are not air conditioned so I didn't think I would last very long. I've just completed 3 months and I'm amazed at the transformation. I'm physically so much stronger and have gone down 2 sizes with very few pounds lost. Yeah....it's been tough....that first month I was so sore I didn't think I could get out of bed some mornings but I did and just kept going. It's all been worth it....I'm becoming a new person.

If I can do this, you can too!!! After surgery just start walking and when you're able.... get on that bicycle You'll get stronger and find other ways to exercise. This surgery and losing weight has a way of motivating you......your life is about to change and I'm sure you will have no regrets.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
