Second week post op - no loss

Recommended Posts

I know you are not supposed to weight yourself every day. I also know that not everyone loses the same. However, I am a bit OCD, and I weigh myself every single day (sometimes twice a day -pathetic I know).

My first week I gained a few, and then lost them and had a total loss of 6 pounds. I am now almost done with week 2, and have only lost 1 pound in the last 6 days. It is not possible that I am not losing weight since I am only getting about 300-400 calories per day at this point. I am walking 2-3 miles each day so I am getting excersize. Has anyone else experienced this?

Hiya dizzylizzy,

having little slows and stalls is completely normal... I didn't lose anything from 2 1/2 weeks ti 5 weeks... at the very early stages you must concentrate on getting well and let your body heal... make sure your liquids are in, relax and go with the flow.

I know what you mean weighing daily, I do most days... can't help myself!!

Oh, one good idea; I started to take measurements... that way when the scale wasn't moving I could still see progress through the lower measurements!!! That kept me on track!

Good luck and well done on your weight loss so far... it does get easier =]

What does your doctor say? And also do you have alot of weight to lose? I've got about 200 left to lose now, I was sleeved Friday (10-8) and have lost 16 lbs. and, lost 18 on post op diet. I don't want to lose my weight as fast as I'm losing it either, but I've been sick the last two days with vomitting and diarrhea.

Are you scales accurate? I went and bought a brand new digital set and paid quite a bit for them. I'm just like you, I say, "I'm not weighing today," but let me walk past the scale early in the morning and I'm on them, lol. You may get up one morning and have dropped 4 or 5. Keep doing what you know is right and talk to your doctor about it, seems to me that is all you can do at this point. DON'T GET DISCOURAGED!!!!!

Your probably still swollen from the surgery and probably still retaining fluids. Are you trying to get your fluids in? Your doing fantastic with the walking! Thats wonderful! Keep it up. . . give it another couple weeks. Your scale will keep you a slave to it though, hide it or get someone to hide it and only give it to you every 2 weeks or so. . . good luck!

From the trauma of surgery, and being pumped full of IV fluids for 5 days, I actually GAINED 26 lbs. in the hospital. Plus your body can hold lots of Water from the swelling alone. It took weeks for it to come off. But, once it started coming off and my body began to heal, it remained a steady loss. Don't throw in the towel. Just give you body what it needs, listen to your surgeons guidllines and it will start coming off. Best of luck to you. Hang in there, we are all pulling for you.

Thank you for the responses and encouragement. I went out and bought a great new scale that tracks your weight loss for you, and when it wasn't moving, it about made me nuts...lol

I have about 70 pounds left to lose, and just thought it would be really quick in the beginning and then slow down. But I am hanging in there remembering it took me 40 some years to get here, I can't expect to fix it too quickly.

Coops - Thanks for the suggestion on measurements - I should have been doing that. You're right - there are more ways to measure your progress. I just expected my first two-three weeks to show big losses. But since when does my body do what I expect it to?...lol

Chiming in here -- I too had a really slow loss up front -- I gained weight in the hospital from the IVs and then sloooowly lost it in the first couple of weeks. The next couple of weeks have been kinder to me. :) BTW, I'm OCD about the scale too! Don't worry, the weight will come off if you keep working the sleeve -- there's virtually no way it can't. Keep plugging along!

Kim and Julie,

Thanks - it's nice to know I'm not the only one that is having (had) this issue. Just checking that I'm not abnormal. .. Well, in that way anyway.. ;-)

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
