Wait, why sugar free?

Recommended Posts

I use artificial sweeteners because I had pre-diabetes before the sleeve and I have to be careful with carbs. Also, I like sugar better than crap (read: artificial sweeteners) so it keeps my sweets-demon in check. It keeps me from consuming lots of empty calories.

All that being said, I'm aware that artificial sweeteners are "frankenfood" and potentially harmful. If you can use them responsibly, then go for it. I seem unable to use sugar responsibly :-(.

I drink Vitamin Water ZERO mixed berry only has 4gms of carbs and all of the ZERO's are great I don't drink plain Water it gives me heartburn don't ask caz I don't know I can drink 3-20oz bottles of these a day with no problems. might give it a try.

If you drink the Vitamin water zero it is sweetend with stevia which is not a chemical but a plant basted sweetner like sugar is but has no calories. I am in the same boat I do not like ingesting artificial sweetners we are just not made to consume chemicals.

Blackberry! I was the original person who mentioned reading.. it's in Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies on pg. 133. Basically it's a chapter on "Knowing what you can eat for the first few months." Toward the end of the chapter, it has a "warning" like a little sidenote: For at least the first one to two months after surgery, you should not have any of the following foods or beverages, because they can cause stomach irritation and discomfort.

Then there is a bullet list with alcohol, caffeinated beverages, carbonated beverages, citrus juices, etc....

One of the bullets is "Sugar and other sugar sweeteners, including the following: dextrin, dextrose, high fructose corn Syrup, fructose, fruit juice concentrate, glactose, lactose, maltose, mannitol, polyol, sorghum, sucrose, turbinado.

I took this to mean what is says. Any kind of sugar can be irritable to the stomach as you're healing. Which I was saying to the original poster who wanted to know why sugar free?

So underneath this list it says, "There is a big difference between "sugar-free" and "no sugar added." You may be very sensitive to any sweetness following surgery. "No sugar added" may sound harmless, but a "No-sugar added" food or drink may have a high natural sugar content, and it can make you nauseated. Proceed with caution."

Then on the bottom of the page, there's a big block with different sugar substitutes, mentions aspartame, splenda, etc...

I hope this helps!

Double check that bottle... if I recall correctly it has 4 carbs per serving... and it has 2.5 servings. Still not a lot in the grand scheme of things but they do add up if you drink more than one a day.

Thanks...It's not quite what I meant, though, I was interested in the source the book itself used for that statement, I have no doubts that the original poster quoted it directly from the book. But realistically, I could release the "All-Sugar Diet" book tomorrow and write all kinds of crap in there, if you know what I mean. I was wondering if the book itself has some sort of reference - they are usually grouped by chapter in the back. I obviously wouldn't expect you to list all the references for the chapter here, but if you end up interested in this and look into some of them and find some legit evidence to prove or disprove it, I'd definitely be curious to hear about it.

P.S. What's with this creepy "so-and-so started a personal conversation with you" notification that this site gives when someone quotes your post? I wasn't sure what to expect when I first saw that....lol.

It is creepy isn't it? I'm not really liking the changes to the site.

No sources in this book which is unfortunate. If it hadn't been so cheap on Amazon, I would have sent it back since only about 1/3 of the book is recipes. Not quite what I expected from something that calls itself a cookbook.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
