Why do I hurt so bad?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Had the sleeve on Aug. 25. I'm doing great other than I have this terrible pain at the jp drain site. I'm having problem's sitting, standing, laying etc.

I'm sure it's probably muscle pain. I've never had any major abdominal sugery, so maybe it's normal!

Any advice?

Recoveries vary so much from person to person. I had minimal pain post op, but if you feel like it is abnormal or you need additional help, have no shame in asking your doc for medication or ensuring that your recovery is going as it needs to.

And yes, be patient with yourself. Not only do you have muscle pain, but 80% of a vital organ removed, ouch!

Hang in there!!!!

I was one of the unfortunate ones to have a lot of pain - much more than I was expecting reading people's experiences on this board.

That being said, you really should check in with your surgeon. The pain may not be "normal" and they should know what you are experiecing. If nothing else, they may be able to recommend new medication or sleeping positions for you.

Best of luck. Sorry to hear of your pain.

Poor baby, I am sorry. I totally relate, I experienced ALOT of initial pain and was also unprepared because I read about some of the folks who were out doing stuff on the third or fourth day. My pain seemed to feel like my stomach (or what was left of it) was having muscle spasms but when they took my drain out I felt so much better- one week out. I know another patient who had a similar experience when her drain was removed. Do you still have yours in?

I totally agree with the others in not hesitating to call your surgeon, mine switched my pain meds and it did help some. Also do try to vary your sleeping positions. I started sleeping in a sort of sitting up position on a couple of pillows the first week, and while I might not have slept as well, it did help the pain alot. Don't feel down, it will get better and be a distant memory soon.:)

The best advice (that you've read 3 times now so it means something) is tell your Dr. I felt like a wuss for feeling like I "couldn't handle" the pain and almost went to the ER the day after surgery because I hurt so bad. My Dr told me to up my pain killers and gave me some tips that made like much more pleasant for the next few days. Good luck!

I'm 2 weeks out today and i still get abd pains, some were fairly painful and some were really painful. But i've learned that I can't use my stomach muscles and the pains go away with in a day or so. After the first 4-5 days of the pain med, i've only used it once since then. Things will get better, just lay low and don't try doing too much. (my error)

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
