My plication was 6 days ago I wanted to share my experience

Recommended Posts

I got my plication done on the 17th by dr cottam in salt lake. I feel really good today. I am so excited that the surgery is done and I feel like I am on the mend. I have not been hungry at all and the heart burn that I have had everyday of my life up until surgery is gone. I don't know what everyone elses experiece has been, but so far I am so impressed with this surgery. I am now just anxious to figure out the food stuff. I can't tell when I am full or when I am hungry yet, but I think alot of that stuff will come with time, I am just excited that I was able to get it done.

Kamie,

What have you worked up to and what is your diet like post op? I too am thinking about plication, but was wondering what the diet was like post op. When will you go to solids?

I know that the ghrelin removal is one of the bigger selling points to sleeving. I'm really curious to see, long term, what the difference is in hunger between plication and regular sleeves.

Hello,

Happy to hear your results are positive so far. Please keep me posted. I am in the process of having my Lapband removed. See how it goes. See how it heals. See how I feel.

Then, I am seriously considering the Sleeve Plication.

Bless you and keep letting me know your progress.

to Momto2,

I was on clear liquid with three Protein Shakes a day the week prior to surgery and now I am on full liquids for two weeks following, but it has not been a big deal because I am not hungry at all. It is a little hard to serve my kids food because I take bites a lot when I am cooking and apparently while I am dishing, so I have to be very aware of what I am doing in my kitchen.

Hello MS LISA,

Who is doing your surgery ? I may be traveling to TJ Mexico in Novemeber also to get my Lapband removed. After healing I want to get the Vertical Sleeve Plication also.

I am doing research on the difference between the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy, only because everyone seems to be mentioning the "Gherlin tissues"; the secreting hunger portion of the stomach is not removed with the plication, so the sleeve gastrectomy "may" be better ? I do not have any idea, but plan on finding out.

How exciting for you! I have already been to Hospital Angeles and had all positive felings about the care, the nurses, etc. If that is where you are scheduled ? I had Dr. Lopez Corvala who is very good.

Take care,

sara

Here are a few youtube videos on the surgery, performed by Dr. Cottam. One is a regular plication/imbrication and the other is a bad removal and imbrication.

Ick, I can't watch more than 2 minutes of either video ...

But I do see why the doctor wants to shrink your liver before surgery.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
