When I'm bored I eat... Oh wait I can't..

I, like a lot of people, when I get bored I want to eat something. Now that I can't do that I find myself less and less bored. Instead of eating I seem to be changing my habit to simply get busy. LoL why didn't I think of "if you eat when your bored, then dint let yourself get bored" before? I'm finding myself being more active, happy, and even social! Has anyone else started to see positive changes in some habits that you can't do anymore?

I'm a boredom eater, as well (and an emotional eater....really, just give me an occasion to eat and I will :frown1:). Good to hear that this can be resolved naturally. School's not starting for another 2 weeks and my boyfriend's out of town for almost as long, so I've been worried about that a bit. I think I might have to pick up knitting again - definitely for the remaining 7 days of Clear Liquids, which is about as boring as it gets!

I let myself get too full one time (from four chicken nuggets mind you) and that is all it took for me to never want to do it again. So now that negitive feeling of pain goes hand-in-hand with over eating. So now when I think about eating more my flash back changes my mind real fast and I do something else to get away from being bored.

Happy dance for pre op diet getting you one step closer to your new life. I know it is hard now but when you look back it is all going to be worth it!! Keep us updated!!

It's still a tiny struggle for me. I don't actually eat anything, but I find myself peering in the fridge and don't remember walking there. Those old habits are really ingrained.

I'm also thinking about digging out my knitting supplies and starting some new projects. I used to read in all of my free time, but I also used to snack while I read. Now I sip Water when I read but sometimes I still find myself staring into the fridge like it has answers for me. So far it's easy to stop and realize I'm not actually hungry. I'm just worried that if I don't break the habit soon, it won't always be so easy.

My husband has been out of town this entire week and I've done really well occupying my time with something other than food.

I'm glad I'm not the only person that had to deal with this, and it's good to see that you're overcoming. Hopefully I can, too.

I suppose the real test will be my first period post op - will I have the urge to do the binge fest I usually do, or will it be just another week?

I do understand that feeling of why am I looking for something to eat? But it is so empowering to me that Im able to say, "Why am I looking for food? " and then walk away to do something else. I never seemed have that full feeling before..

My Nut likes me to have several 'small' meals/snacks a day... so I find I am eating more times than I did before the op, but obviously so much less in quantity - which for me is really weird, as you associate it with not eating much.

I've not been hungry since the op - any rumblings I have I think are just acid...so I have to keep reminding myself this is a good, different thing I am going thru. Weird!! LOL

Knitting is seriously the way to go, during my 3 weeks of healing/vacation after the surgery I picked up knitting again and made a baby blanket for a friend that is expecting. It was wonderfully zen, the movement and click of the needles, seeing my work grow in front of me, getting into that zone of "just one more row" instead of "just one more cookie". =) Plus it gave a rhythm to my sips, every two rows I would take a mouthful and swallow it slowly over the course of the following row. Maybe I'll post pics of the baby blanket here before I give it to her, "blankey- brought to you by VSG". =)

Now I sip Water when I read but sometimes I still find myself staring into the fridge like it has answers for me.

I live alone, so I took advantage of it and have thrown out/given away to friends all the stuff I can't have for the next few weeks. That way, nothing's looming in front of my eyes. So far it seems reasonably easy to resist temptation, since the fear of having a leak is quite pronounced at this stage post-op, but we'll see how I feel 20 days out.

I was having that very thought just the other day. I was getting ready to go shopping for some smaller pant (always a fun part of this journey), and I realized that I had not stopped to eat lunch and it was after 2:00. Prior to this I would have in all likelihood been planning my lunch within an hour of Breakfast ending. It has only been a little over three months and my lifestyle has already seen signifigant changes. These were changes I knew I should have made before, but for whatever reason could not. I feel energized in general every day, and I think alot of it comes from finally feeling empowered where my body is concerned for the first time in my life!

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
