optimum carb count

Recommended Posts

Into my second week post-op, am still on Protein Shakes and broths but am also adding thicker smooth Soups like Tomato Soup. What is the optimum carb count during this phase? I try to select the lowest carb soups possible but the are still present.

When I questioned my nut about this, she told me not to worry about counting the carbs, just getting in the Protein and Water. So, now almost 6 weeks out, I'm still not counting, just eating lots of protein. I still don't know about the "right" amount of carbs, but by the time I get my protein in, there isn't much room left for anything else! LOL

I didn't even worry about carb counts until mushy/puree/soft solids. We're consuming so little that really focusing on hydration, and some calorie consumption was my surgeon and nutritionist's primary concern.

My program is very carb conscious. About 5 carbs per meal, max of 30 carbs/day. It must be working because I'm losing 1-2 lbs a day.

See, that's what I was afraid of. I'm averaging more than 40 carbs a day, even as I struggle with meeting quota for liquids and Protein. I sip continuously from 9AM to 9PM and STILL do not manage to make quota. I'm 12 days out.

The carbs are definitely coming from my boxed Soups. I try to get low carb low sodium etc. etc. but they still sneak in there. I'm about to start my 3rd week post-op and am on Brown Cow Greek Yogurt which has 23 (!!) grams of Protein per serving. A serving is 8 oz. so i just thin it out with a little Water and some SF Torani Syrup and turn it into a 10 oz. shake.< /p>

Does everyone count carbs and calories?

I was wondering what doing an Atkins 'type' diet would do, since it is SO hard to keep

my calories AND my carbs low.

I try to keep it below 30 carbs a day, but my nutritionist said more carbs from milk, yogurt, fruit and veggies were ok. No white carbs at all.

Donna, when were you able to incorporate fruit? I am now 3 weeks out and am eating scrambled egg, tuna, very very moist steak, along with rtd Protein Drinks. I'm taking my Vitamins but would really love to eat an orange or plum or some other soft fruit that is high in vitamins and enzymes. Now that I am back at work and cannot get those delicious blended Soups my carb count is restricted to whatever may be in my rtd's which, right now, are EAS low carb so only 4 per serving. How do you make yourself eat when you're not hungry? I've taken in only 300 + - cals today, I have to get 600.

Time for Protein powder and a shaker bottle. I recommend Isopure Zero.

I get hungry, but not as bad as before surgery. Or maybe I just want to eat. I can't tell. For more calories, use 2 scoops Protein Powder in your drinks.(that's 50 grams Protein, 220 calories) For fruit, blend frozen berries into your shake when at home. I'm still on soft solids and I'm not allowed to have fresh fruit, veggies, or steak yet. You could buy canned fruit (in juice, not in syrup) but know it has a lot of sugar in it.

You'll be able to have fresh fruit soon--for me it's another 4 days, but remember to peel apples etc as they are too fibrous for the new stomach. Anything you don't think will digest easily, peel.

Also try working lowfat cheese into your diet for protein and more calories. Same with Greek Yogurt, nonfat milk. I've been running 600-800 calories easily. Hope this helps.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
