Wow Carla, that's exciting! You've got a quick turn around from getting your approval to your actual surgery date. The thing I'm least looking forward to is the fact that I'm going to feel compelled to do a serious cleaning in my house since I know I won't be able to afterward. But, that's a good way to stay occupied until surgery. Congratulations!

Hi Carla,

Your news has given some encouragement. :crying: I hope I will be able to hear the same new soon. I toohave United Healthcare Choice Plus, but from what I read in my benefits coverage; I don't believe they would approve me. I haven't started my process yet because I was discouraged when I read that no surgeries were covered pertaining to obeasity. Are there any tips/information you could share with me on how you received an approval from them. Please share!!!

Thanks

Danielle

Thanks Krystal, I's scared and excited, met with the surgeon today, they didn't even want money up front which is strange, I kept asking what I needed to pay.lol

Too funny! It probably didn't feel quite "real" without money exchanging hands. But, that rocks you aren't paying anything up front. You won't know what your real balance will be til everything is submitted to UHC, discounts applied and then their portion paid. Just remember to keep up with all your copays and out of pocket and mileage so you can see if it adds up to enough next year to take as a tax deduction ;-)

I hope you are making progress on your test for apena. Take care. Carla

Danielle,

This depends on what your employer has written into their policies as a covered benefit. Some people with UHC have a weight loss surgery benefit, some don't. For my employer, different UHC policies cover different things. In my case, we have to have the HRA plan and not the HMO plan to qualify for weight loss surgery.

You'll have to make some calls to UHC customer service or to your HR/benefits department to find out if you qualify. If you don't, you might be able to change to a different plan during open enrollment in order to qualify for the WLS benefit.

Can any of you tell me how long it took to get insurance approval? I finish my six month diet this week, and then my nurse at the surgeon's office will be submitting to insurance next week. I feel like I might jump out of my skin at any moment, I'm so excited and anxious about finally getting this surgery. I've read on these forums about continued denials, appeals, month long waits for approvals, etc. I have UHC, all they require is a six month diet and psych evaluation. Any advice or words of encouragement are appreciated!!! I'm new to all this!

It took me 8 days, it may have been sooner but the office person said I'll let you know when I know but at 8 days I called her anyway and had surgery 9 days later. Good Luck and keep us posted so we can move over for you!! Carla:lol0:

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
