Anyone Sleeved in Europe?

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

I understand that most of you live in the U.S. or Canada and had or plan to have your surgery there or travel South to Mexico. However, I live in Ireland and would like to link up with anyone who had or plan to have their sleeve this side of the Atlantic.

I am particularily interested in hearing experiences with the different places, and any recommendations you may have.

I am not covered by insurance, so I will be funding this myself. Nevertheless, I do not intend to put the cost as the top priority, although I probably will take it into consideration to some extent!

Is anyone aware of any "Centres of Excellence" over here? I have heard of some places that have an exceedingly high reputation for gastric banding, but would that necessarily mean that they would be good at VSG's too?

I also consider India and Jerusalem too far away, although I see plenty of references to them.

All comments welcome,

Regards,

Bookleen :confused1:

Hi Bookleen, I live in London and was sleeved on February 27th at Charing Cross Hospital which is a National Centre of Excellence. I have nothing but praise for them! I was lucky to get my op on the NHS because of my co-morbidities and from referal to surgery was four months.

I'm also lucky that I live very close to the hospital, however I know several people who have travelled a long way to get there (including a couple of people from Ireland). If you want to look at their website it is Welcome to Imperial Weight Centre

Good luck hun xx

Hello tiaras,

I am delighted to hear from you and I have replied to your invite to be a friend. I hope I did it right as I am not too familar with these type of forums.

I looked up your Hospital and I would have to agree with you that you have landed on your feet! It sounds absolutely fantastic!

I am also impressed with your weight loss since your surgery late february. Well Done!

I have already booked mine. The date is fixed for 26th April and I am travelling to Belgium to have it done. That news only came today.

Would love to keep in touch throughout the coming months.

Regards,

Bookleen

Hi Bookleen

Who is doing your surgery in Belgium?

Mine is Dr Marc Focquet. I had a consultation meeting in Glasgow last month and was pleased with the package offered and level of support. Just wish it was sooner so I can get started.

Have over 100lbs to lose :lol0: so the quicker I get started the better!

I'm sure you'll do great on 26th April - would love to hear how you get on, will you keep in touch?

Hi Lyn,

I am pleased to "meet" you.

I will be going to the same surgeon as you, but a week earlier so I can give you an idea of what to expect.

I don't know of anyone else who has gone there. Do You?

I decided to book an extra night in the hotel, it helps to make me more confident. Probably not needed but I feel better about it.

Regards,

Bookleen

Hello Everyone,

It is a week pre-op for me and I am trying to get myself prepared.

With all this volcanic ash flight disruption I may not be going anywhere!

Looking for advise on what steps I need to take to prepare for my post-op homecoming?

In particular what do I need to buy in to have ready?

All tips and suggestions welcome.

Bookleen

Hi there

Sorry haven't been in touch I've been away for a few days!

I'm sure that the flight situation will sort itself out shortly - fingers crossed.

I haven't had my detailed information through yet - which hotel are you staying at and for how long? I'm arriving earlier than necessary on the 3rd may - will you still be there?

Love to hear from you!

Lyn x

Hi Bookleen - when do you go out to Belgium and how are you feeling about it all now?

Lyn

Hello Everyone and especially Lyn,

Well I am home. I was sleeved on Monday 26th April in Belgium, and flew back home last night (30th April). I had a little holiday in Belgium in a lovely 4 star hotel. I opted to stay a little longer than necessary in case I ran into difficulties. Of course I didn't have any problems at all.

I also had my gallbladder removed at the same time. It was full of stones, so I am very pleased to have got that done, which saved another operation later on.

I really would recommend Dr Marc Focquet and Dr Toon Sonneville who were both present for my surgery and aftercare. I felt I was absolutely spoiled , I got such good attention! and lapped it all up!

I was sleeved by "Surgical Obesity Solutions" in St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Zottegem, Belgium.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
