Thanks Cashley. This is definitely not running the normal course. I have had strep a lot when I was younger. Haven't had it for some years. It would usually be calmed down and easy to deal with the right antibiotics and a few days rest. definitely most of the pain would be gone after about 36 hours. but this is crazy!! It has never gone on this long, or been this painful.

I am VERY surprised they did not admit you. When your throat is that swollen and the tonsils are badly infected, you really need IV antibiotics and to be observed for airway obstruction. I would suggest you NOT be alone until the swelling subsides. Please see an ENT ASAP. Let us know how your recovery progresses.

I was surprised too, but they sent me home. honestly i am more comfortable at home. and DH never leaves my side. he has even taken to standing by the door while i am going to the bathroom in case i need help. LOL how romantic!

At first the doctor said that I can't leave unless I can eat or drink. Yet at 3am they sent me packin...and I still couldn't get any Water down. But they put in two bags through IV. Got me rehydrated and said that would keep me until my appt to determine what they are going to do with me.

OH! And they gave me prednisone (sp?) and percoset. I choked trying to get the prednisone down, but I did manage to get the percoset down. It was a struggle, with much crying. But i figure once it kicks in and maybe takes an edge off I'll be able to get the prednisone down.

Thank God they gave you prednisone. THAT is what will aid in keeping your airway open until the antibiotics kick in. Try crushing them but definitely get them down. I'm very glad your hubby is there with you. Moist heat (shower, bath) and warm liquids will work better than dry air and cold beverages. Try sipping liquids continuously. When you have a fever, the body dehydrates more quickly. See if you can get an emergency appt to see the EMT today. Also, DON'T lie flat... keep your head elevated to keep the airway open.

oh yeah, i def can't lay flat. i have cried so much over the past few days from the pain my sinuses are all clogged up. i have been spending all day in this really comfy chaise lounge we have. i have been drinking Water, and even got some chicken broth down which was nice. i am soooooo hungry. i tried pudding, but it was too thick. i couldn't even drink an isopure! can you believe that!! so i am sticking to water and broth. i am alternating hot and cold compresses on my throat for the pain and the swelling.

Funny, This isn't funny!! This sounds so serious... Please insist that they admit you for IV, antibiotics!!! How can you get those things down your swollen throat! I think that strep is one of those bugs that can eventually hurt other organs. How can they not admit you??? Ill keep you in my prayers. God bless you and your family~!

i can get them past my throat while it is numb. but that is the only way. i just took my last antibiotic pill, so they said they wanted to see how that went and see if there was any improvement. we will see. if it does nothing, i am not going to just sit around. i agree that these infections can spread if not caught and corrected quickly. I am not going to just sit around and let my throat rot out. :)

Any better tonight Funnyduddies? I've been thinking about how lousy you must feel. My kids are home with headache/fever and are miserable. I never thought of strep. I'm going to get the flashlight right now! Hope you're doing better now......lucky your DH is with you to help. Get better!

the pain pills really make things easy. i have been able to drink chicken broth today, just forcing it past my throat. with the edge taken off of the pain i can really force myself to drink some. i have been getting a little bit of Water, and a little bit of broth. about a cup and a half of each. tomorrow i am going to try some pudding. I can't get that down now.

Amy--

Just found your post. I am a Physician Asst.....so this is what I know. Cool fluids actually feel better on a sore throat than hot. But you go w/ whatever works. We give tonsillectomy patients popsicles and ice cream for a reason!! :) Also you can easily handle 1000mg Tylenol.....That's 2 extra strength. You can take Ibuprofen 400-600mg every 8 hours (be careful too soon as this can cause your kidneys to fail)....in between take the tylenol. Personally, I am thinking maybe you had a virus AND strept.... sounds like the flu elevated your temp quickly....and the strept.....I just had strept recently. Don't forget to boil or throw away your toothbrush!!! I did and it re-ocurred!!! :) People don't get admitted now a days as quickly as it is more comfortable at home as you said. Never did see the name of your antibiotic....but prednisone is wonderful to take down the swelling but since it's a steroid can actually impede your healing....and really should be careful mixing prednisone and ibuprofen very rough on the stomach!! I think followup w/ the ENT is a great idea and important!!! Close follow up as needed!! Even if you only drink a tsp every 5 min that is like an IV.....picking things like gatorade are a great idea as it has some electrolytes and may help!?!

I hope you are feeling better and this helps!!!!

Hi Funny, Hope you are feeling much better. I am not a nurse, or PA...I am the Mom of a child with multiple cases of Strep Throat. From the time my DD was 3 until she was 13, we had no less than 3-4 positive cultured strep cases a year. FINALLY at 13 they removed her tonsils. She has had it 2 times since and is now 25! When she had to take her medical records in for the Army, they were shocked by her file, and tested her, and found her to be a carrier of the strep virus. None of the rest of the family or anything ever caught it from her, but she would get the slightest bit run down, and boom she had it again. She would be so miserable, so I feel bad for you! One thing that a pediatrician had her gargle with that really helped her through the years, was a really nasty looking combination...but it did work!!! It also works for cankor sores in the mouth (she also ended up allergic to the metal in her braces!!) He had us take equal amounts of liquid kaopectate (upset stomach/diahrea medicine), and liquid benadryl, mix them, and either gargle and spit, or even gargle and swallow, will not hurt. When she was very young we just gave it to her as medicine, as she got older she spit! It separates worse than vinegar and oil...and it looks atrocious! BUT it helped. The kaopectate makes it stick to the tonsils, and the benadryl reduces the swelling, same with mouth sores. shake like crazy and pour, it will separate almost instantly!! Also, you might try the Extra Strength Liquid Tylenol, either regular, or the PM (it will have the benadryl it it too), possibly the liquid would ease the tonsils as it passed over them? Many of us bandsters were given the liquid Tylenol by our surgeons, and it works! Hope you feel much better very soon!

i think this is the solution they used on me in the hospital last night to see if I could get a pill down. They had me gargle with this funky milky light pink solution. they wanted me to swallow it, but i just couldn't. it did help if only for a moment. maybe 15 to 20 minutes. but that might have been cause my pain level was so high.

at one point they asked me, on a scale of 1 to 10, ten being the worse, how would you rate your pain level? I sat there, crying, back muscles siezing. I said "7". The woman says, "its ok. you don't have to be strong. this seems like it might be a ten" my husband pipes up and says "you weren't there for the birth of our daughter. There were 5 medical people in the room and they all started laughing, a lot.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
