Had my consult today(long)

Recommended Posts

So we got dumped on by a major storm and I didnt even make it to work but I made it to my consult. I was brought in by a nurse and weighed in at 439 and with a BMI of 61. Then a second nurse came in to do a work up and get family history and explain to me all of the different surgeries. She seemed shocked at what I knew already. I was like hey I am a tad obsessive and am on the web every night reading about the sleeve. Then my surgeon came in he was so nice and said that yeah the sleeve was perfect choice for me and that i had to lose 10 percent of my body weight in the next six months for insurance approval. I asked and yes they do a leak test. I was then sent to the bariatric cordinator who schedule me to get all kinds of tests done. I will be contacted by the nutritonist and the psychriatrist so I can start that part as well. They had me in there for two hours and were so helpful and friendly. I have to go back to them in six weeks. They want me to lose slowly about a pound a week. I said hey I will do Optifast I dont care. He said nope just watch the carb intake and get plenty of Protein. They dont think they will have a probelm getting me approved for insurance. I am very glad I chose this program because they answered every question and really appear to support me. I will post more as I continue this process but I was so happy to take this first step.

Thats good news then! Well done.

I am always surprised when surgeons or Doctors are surprised that you know the information or have read up on something, thats quite scary to think some people don't.... and would consider undertaking such a life changing thing without some more information.... but then maybe thats just me being nosy!!

Keep us informed - I have a consult booked next week and one the week after with a different surgeon.

I am so happy you are starting well on this journey. I am happy to hear insurance is now covering this. I am a bit suprised it takes 6 months, but, maybe that is a better way to do it. We all want to be sucessful, maybe this way insures a better overall result.

I am hoping the best for you.

Yeah the nurse told me that a lot of people come in there with no idea about surgery at all. I was like wow this is a major decision and I will be informed.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
