Is chewing gum a problem after sleeve?

Recommended Posts

I am 2 1/2 weeks post-op. Been thinking about trying a piece of sugar-free gum. Can't find anything about chewing gum on the forum and my doc has said nother pro or con. Anybody had good or bad experiences chewing gum?

I chew gum all the time and have had no problems. My doctor didn't mention anything to me about gum either, but I'm sure it is safe as long as we chew the low sugar, low calorie ones...and don't swallow it...lol!! I hope this helps!

Have you ever chewed gum and not paid attention, then accidentally swallowed it? I have. When your sleeve is new, the gum could get stuck in your staple line and cause problems with it healing...I have been told to NEVER chew gum until you are totally healed up...I'd say 3 months at least. Why take a chance?

I was told to avoid gum because you swallow alot of air when chewing gum (potentially filling you up and hence not getting your Protein in). Not sure if this is true. But I would wiat a while in case of accidentely swallowing it.

I haven't had any problems with gum chewing.

I waited until I was 3 months out before chewing gum only because I was extremely protective of my staple line.

Now, I don't have any issues with chewing gum. I did suck on sugar free hard candies, peppermints mainly early out.

i was also told to avoid chewing gum because of air, but i have chewed some already. usually chew after just having my meals just in case it is true about the air and filling my tummy up with air. i also suck on peppermints. i would probably just do breath mints for quite some time. give that tummy a chance to heal.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
