Greetings all! I had the gastric sleeve on Jan 4 at Kaiser West LA. All in all, doing pretty good. However, it seems no matter what I do, I keep getting this gas pain. :) It seems to sit right in the upper back area. Is anyone else experiecing this or have any ideas??

Thanks,

Stacey

Hi, we got sleeved the same day! :lol0: Anyway, I'm still getting gas pain right around my sternum, and the only thing that helps is to FORCE myself to burp. I pat myself on the back (haha), push on my throat with my hands, etc. I don't know if that will help, but that's what I've been doing.

Hey thanks for the idea! So how are you doing as far as eating? Are you doing the pureed meat thing? I haven't been able to bring myself to do this yet. I have had some fish and just chew it to death. The thing I miss for sure is rice and bread!

The best thing that worked for me getting rid of all of the gas was to walk walk walk. I walked every night til it went away.

I haven't pureed meat yet. I've had some tuna w/ mayo (I also have some canned chicken I should use..), fat-free refried Beans, string cheese, fat-free cottage cheese, banana, and rice. These little instant rice cups I bought have a little Protein & my list of allowed foods includes well-cooked rice & Pasta for mushies (my dietitian told me not to worry about counting carbs though), so I've had 1/4 of rice with 1 tsp. benecol vegetable oil spread & some creole seasoning one meal a day - it's my favorite. :lol0: I think when I get to the non-pureed meats I'll probably limit my rice, but for now it seems to sit well with me! Though I did notice that the refried beans tend to make me more gassy in the chest so I'm trying to avoid them a little more. I hope it helps! :lol0:

girls...don't force the gas by burping. Try using a heating pad 20 minutes at a time. Use GasX strips and be sure you're sipping fluids, and not gulping.

It will all get better very soon!

You betcha! the gas pain was interesting to say the least. . right in my left shoulder and under the clavicle. . . i was told by the nurses to put a heating pad on the area when resting, and increase walking and stretching my shoulder a bit. . . you could try the hugging thing to stretch, hug yourself and bend forward a bit at the waist . . hope it helps

I also had the pain real bad so I got myself some Equate extra strength gas relief chewable tablets from Walmart. I also was told to stop chewing gum as that really adds swallowed air and causes even more gas pain. Now the pain is basically gone (though gas is with us for awhile)...LOL!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
