New here, getting sleeve Feb. 1

Recommended Posts

Hi all! I've been perusing the boards trying to gather info. My name is Sabrina and I have 4 small children. I had been thin my entire life. All of a sudden at 33 I had a newborn and a 1 year old and about 100 extra lbs of flub. My sister and I went to Tiajuana and had lap band surgery with Dr. Ortiz on 4/1/04. I lost 80 lbs in 6 months and looked and felt great!

Then in 2006 I kept having issues with a "bubbly tummy." I was miserable and in pain almost all of the time. I was also pregnant with #3 and attributed it to being knocked up. 13 months after he was born I had our youngest child. Four babies in 5 years wreaked havoc on my once thin body. Even though I still had the band, I gained a large amount of weight with the last two pregnancies. I went to the doctor and was checked many times for the stomach pains I was having. From March 2006 until July 2009 I was in pain nearly all the time.

in July 2009 my doctor decided to go in and remove my band. It wasn't working and I was miserable with it. He was going to take it out, take a look, then do the sleeve at that time. Well when he went in he found my band all eroded and a huge hole in my stomach. That was repaired. I was in the ICU for two days and not allowed to have any Water - not even ice chips - for fear I may have a leak. On day 3 they had me swallow barium under fluoroscopy and I was fine. I got some ice chips and I swear that was the absolute best thing I have ever put in my mouth LOL

Due to the repair my doc made to my stomach, he wanted to wait until I was at least 6 months post op to do the sleeve. I have gained 50 lbs and 4 jean sizes since having that stupid band removed. My sister's eroded too and she had it removed in the summer of 2008. Hers nearly killed her. Infection just ravaged her body, it was very dire. She pulled through fine though. I know people who are getting the band and are so happy. I was happy with mine too for two years. I don't want to be a downer and tell them my horror stories LOL I've noticed a lot of you have had your bands removed. May I ask why?

I'm still perusing the site. There is so much information here and so many stories. If you will indulge me in a coupe of questions, please? We cruise 6 weeks after my surgery. My doctor, even though he has warned me I am at a higher risk for leaks due to my previous hole and could possibly be in the hospital for a month, is confident I'll be ok to sail the high seas 6 weeks post op. I've been salivating over the menus on board, so I am regretting having the surgery before the cruise LOL

I like to drink. I have four kids; I need to drink. Honestly, if it wasn't for fattening Sam Adams, I would likely be 110 lbs :wink1: I'll stick with martinis afterward, low carbs and less fattening than wine. I will have a cocktail a night on the cruise. This is vacation and vacations are made for fun and some drinking. How do y'all do with a cocktail? I cannot imagine it would be any different than pre-op, but I have read about stomach burning?

I adore having a diet dr pepper every morning. How do y'all do with carbonated beverages? I can give that up if I have to, but I really do enjoy having one in the morning. I can go back to coffee. Much like quitting smoking, the hardest part will be while driving. I like to hit up sonic for a route 44 diet dr p if I'm going to be in the car for a while. I can switch to water though if I have to do it. Can you still toss back a soda, or is it hard on your tummy now?

I am happy to report that as soon as I got that stupid band out, no more tummy pain. I don't want to do anything to screw up and start tummy pain again. That was just miserable. I look forward to getting to know everyone :)

Welcome Sabrina! I'm sorry to read about your horrible experience with the band. I can't really speak personally to your questions. I know with my recovery, as a new wls patient, I would have been just fine going on a cruise 6 weeks post-op, but wouldn't plan on eating normally at that point or drinking alcohol. As for drinking, I don't do it personally, but I've read about others who do further out and have no problems. My nutritionist/surgeon said carbonated drinks were out after surgery. According to them there is a slight possibility that carbonation can stretch the pouch, but no research has been done to agree or disagree with this.

Hopefully some people will chime in soon that has more personal experience with your questions. Good luck!

Thanks for the response! I guess I'll slowly ween myself off my soda now so it isn't such a shock in a couple of weeks.

Hey Sabrina, and welcome to VST. You've had a heck of a journey thus far.

As for my band complications, I had a flipped port from early on, and it caused a lot of pain and discomfort. The tubing was actually tugging on my stomach in addition to all the other wonderful "band" issues. So, I was able to revise to the sleeve.

As for your concerns, I was not released to drink alcohol until my 3.5-4 month post-op mark. I have a glass of wine a couple times a week. It doesn't get me drunk faster unless I drink it quickly, then the drunk wears off, and I maintain a nice relaxed feeling.

I'm 7 months out, and I indulge in a soda once a week, once every other week. It takes me 2-3 days to drink a soda because I don't drink it all the time. Some doctors are absolutely against them. Mine happens to believe that they are just wasted calories and that it will not stretch out the remaining. We do not have a pouch like RNY or band patients so it's a little different.

My post-op diet for the sleeve revision was

2 weeks clears

2 weeks full liquids (I did a week doc progressed me to mushies)

I did mushies for awhile with some soft Proteins for 2-3 weeks then onto regular food.

You'll need to stick to the post-op diet because healing of the staple line is completely different than with your band surgery. food particles, seeds, and chunks of stuff can get in your staple line causing infection, irritation and lead to a leak.

I had a leak 2 days post-op revision, and it wasn't fun at all. I was in ICU for 5 days, on a ventilator, and had a slim chance of survival. The leak was successfully repaired, but I was on a pic lin in my arm being force fed 1800 calories a day through a TPN bag for over 2 weeks. I didn't have anything to eat or drink for 22 days. NOTHING no ice chips, no Water, nothing at all.

Just my opinion, I think 6 weeks out is way too early to consume alcohol. Your stomach has been traumatized, and will still technically be healing. I've heard people talk about stomach burning, but wine (Riesling) hasn't bothered me at all.

Keep us posted on your journey, and I'll be looking for updates.

Vacation just won't be the same without a martini, but I'd hate to rip my stomach open at sea LOL The diet makes sense now tat you've explained it. Thanks for the info. I'm just looking forward to getting this done and over with. I was in the hospital for two weeks (was released one day, then back the next for an abscess) after my band removal. I was planning on that long for this surgery simply based upon my previous experience. My surgeon is very concerned about a leak.

Yeah, vacation may be a little bland without the martini, but I bet you'll not even be in the mood for drinking by that time.

I had 3 abscesses develop 6 weeks after my revision that landed me in the hospital again for 7 days. I had drains, and antibiotics and all that fun stuff all over again. They think little microscopic bacteria was stuck in my abdomen from the leak, and they formed pockets. It was a pain in the butt, and very exhausting.

I was my surgeon's first leak. Not really proud of it, but he did an amazing job saving my life. I know in my heart of hearts (after reviewing pics/xrays/video from surgery) that my stomach was damaged by the band. It really wasn't my surgeon's lack of experience or "fault".

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
