Denton, Texas bandsters will meet for the second monthly dinner at Jason's Deli this Thursday, March 1, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Jason's is in the shopping center, across from the mall, on the northeast corner of Loop 288 and I-35e. Spouses and friends are welcome as well as those who are not banded but curious or planning to. Last month, we had a great time. Hope to see you there!

Hi All,

Add me to your list of happy North Texans!:)

I'm Cindi, from Garland, Northeast "suburb" of Big D. I had my surgery at SCOR by Dr. Benavides (he's AMAZING) on January 19th, 2007. I have the big #11 band, and have had 1 fill so far. Doing OK, am hungry and dieting, going for fill in about 1.5 weeks. Love this LBT, glad to know there are lots of us out there!

Keep it up, love!

Cindi, My gosh! You got banded eleven days after I did and you've already had one fill, and you're going for your second in a week and a half? I was banded on January 8, and I get my first fill on March 10 (in a week and a half. I was told to wait and let my stomach heal first. I can't complain about the weight loss. I've lost 27 lbs. so far. I've heard nothing but good about Dr. B, so I can't argue with him, but it just seems like that's sort of fast.

:) Hey Richard! I've enjoyed your posts around here:)

I saw Dr. B before I got my first fill (I was empty <fill wise>, eating solid foods, and having no trouble putting the food in!). He said with no complications, that was a good sign (getting hungry, eating successfully) of everything being in place. Dr. B just wants you to call for another fill when you are following instructions the best you can, but are still hungry. I know it seems weird, and have read some folks have to wait a LONG time. Sometimes even sounds like insurance dictates when, which seems way too structured and frustrating to me. That would be so hard to wait...it's dieting without the "benefits" of being banded! They scheduled me 4 weeks out from surgery for 1st fill, my next is March 14. My nurse at the fill center said that if I was still very ravenous (constant state for me, must find diversions) and able to easily eat what I used to, I could even move up the next fill. Said it was very normal to feel this way, even after my 1st fill. I don't have a set number of fills I can get...just whatever it takes. They are pretty aggressive, but us big banders may require that! I know everyone is different, but this seems to work for me.

Keep it up, love!

I was just wondering since you are from texas, where you go for fills. I was banded in Mexicali on the 24th and I was looking for someone that would do it that was closer?

I live in Mansfield, which is South of the D/FW metroplex. I was banded on Halloween 2007. I started @ 251 lbs., and I've lost 29 lbs., putting me at 222. My goal is 130, so 92 lbs. to go. I was banded by Dr. Richard Carter in Arlington. He is wonderful with such a caring personality. He also had to remove a hiatal hernia that was found during my lap-band surgery. Whew! Thank God he found it. It would depend on where y'all meet up as to wether or not I could attend. I work in North Irving, North of D/FW airport between 114 & 635. However, if I can't make it to meet up with y'all, I can still chat online. I'm very new to this online support group thing, and just joined this forum today. Anyway, I'm interested in chatting with new people, and hearing others experiences. So far, mine has been pretty good. I just had my first fill on 1/30/08, and it hurt!!!! :) I go back on 2/27/08 for my 2nd one. I'm looking so forward to getting on with my life as a healthy person again (I haven't always had this problem), because I was starting to have some concerns on my health is what prompted me to do this, and I'm so glad I did.

I just found this thread. I can't believe I haven't seen it before now but glad I found it. I live in McKinney and was banded by Dr. Jay, my hero! I've never been to his support group that meets at Medical City but he comes up once a month to McKinney for a support group meeting. I'd love to hear from anyone that lives close to McKinney and would like to get together and talk lap band...something I can do with no problem!

Mark, that is AWESOME! I've just been approved by my insurance and will be having my surgery done by Dr. Carter also. I'm just waiting on his office to call so we can schedule it.

Did he perform the surgery at USMD or at the HEB location?

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
